Kathy and I have been married forever. Actually, it has been 40 years (August 16, 1969). We waited a few years before having our family, but once the boys came along we had someone in our home with us for the next 35 years.
Our two youngest sons moved out of the home back in March. Now, it's just Kathy and Phil all over again. No more cleaning up after the pigs. No more feeding the pigs. We still have them over once or twice a week with our daughter-in-law for dinner because we like them a lot.
Now, however, they are dinner guests and no longer our sons the slobs. If we would have known it could be this much fun we would have kicked them out a long time ago.
Well, Kathy and I have made some decisions about our new lifestyle. We have thoroughly enjoyed the homes we have lived in for all the familiar reasons. We lived in neighborhoods with many other families that had children the same age as our children. Our sons went to school with these neighbor children and became friends for life with them.
Each of our four sons has several good friends in adult life that were friends in grammar school. Kathy and I have good friends that we met from the neighborhood that we still see today. But some things have changed.
We now find ourselves wanting a more carefree style of living. We have lived in our home for 12 years now but we no longer need it. We like it, but we don't need it. I keep myself in good shape but I no longer look forward to mowing the grass, shoveling the sidewalks, cleaning out the gutters, trimming bushes, making small repairs, and so on.
I never minded this stuff before because my family was always here and we always had friends over. Things were always going on around our home. I really don't think I've become too lazy... but I'm starting to dread these household chores.
Kathy hasn't had a new kitchen to work in for over 20 years. She entertains a lot and would love the new amenities. A new kitchen and a new bathroom were always things on a list we were going to have "someday." It looks like someday is here.
All of a sudden, fewer responsibilities looks very attractive for both of us. We are not about to retire. Kathy wants to teach and I want to write for years to come. We want to be active in the lives of our sons, our daughters-in-law, and future grandchildren. So, we are going to remove some of the day to day responsibilities and make time for our new Baby Boomer Carefree Lifestyle.
We have an opportunity to move into a brand new "village complex" that is only a few blocks from our current home. We love mid-town Omaha and this village, like our home, is located in the heart of the city. It's a mix of condos, apartments, restaurants, shops, a park for concerts, a multi screen movie theater, business offices, a hotel, and a neighborhood grocery store.
We will have underground parking, a top floor view of the village, and no maintenance. We have access to a clubhouse, a pool, and several eating places for our family and friends. Our home is now up for sale and the village is calling us.
Who knows how long it may take to sell our home, but we're ready for the lifestyle change. Bring it on.
