Crew Stadium is hosting the U.S. men's FIFA World Cup qualifier against Mexico Sept. 10.
The Columbus Crew has gotten a bump in season-ticket sales thanks to the U.S.-Mexico World Cup qualifier match to be played at Crew Stadium on Sept. 10.
Crew Senior Vice President Mike Malo told me the Major League Soccer club is estimating it sold an extra 200 to 300 ticket packages for the current season because they came with the perk of priority access to tickets for the World Cup qualifier. The match is expected to attract a sellout crowd of more than 22,000 at Crew Stadium.
Malo said the pre-sale window for U.S.-Mexico tickets opens Friday for Crew fans who bought full-season packages and June 15 for those with partial-season plans. Members of Crew supporter groups such as the Hudson Street Hooligans and Crew Union will also be able to apply for tickets in advance of the start of sales to the public July 19.
?We?re hoping all our season-ticket holders get tickets,? Malo said, ?but it depends on how many of them buy and what U.S. Soccer makes available.?
He was referring to the U.S. governing body, which is also offering a ?pre-sale opportunity? to U.S. Soccer Supporters Club members. Malo said U.S. Soccer controls the ticketing process, not the Crew or Major League Soccer.
As for sales to the public, U.S. Soccer is using a random selection draw that has some twists and turns in it. You can click here for your best bet to understand how it works, but Malo said the process is somewhat like a lottery.
?People put in an application to buy,? he said, ?and applications will be randomly selected. It?s not first-come, first-served.?
With tickets expected to be at a premium, U.S. Soccer said it is looking at adding more seats for the U.S.-Mexico match. If that happens, fans not selected in the random-selection draw will have their names re-entered for a shot at buying the additional seats.
Prices start at $60 with buyers limited to requesting a maximum of four tickets.
