Comedic Facebook Page Upsetting Some Hoosiers

There's a new Facebook page getting a lot of buzz, but we're learning some Hoosiers are upset about it. It's called Boonville Watch, a page that posts comedic "fake" police runs and emergencies. This is similar to pages like "Evansville Watch" that monitor police and fire scanners to keep people informed. But one joke post actually caused a real reaction, and the Boonville Police Chief says he's not laughing. "Amber alert: Man missing. Wearing blue pants, red and white striped shirt, round wire rim glasses, and carries a striped walking stick. Answers to the name Waldo. Please notify us when he is found." These are majority of the kind of posts on Boonville Watch. One resident tells us, "Well it's satire and it's not real, it is funny at times." The page clearly states it is fake, some posts talk about traffic or actual businesses in Warrick county.
"There's alot of people that will take what they see on social media and run with it, thinking that its the truth and unfortunately that's not always the case," says Boonville Police Chief Daryl Saltzman, his department has received calls about some posts. But Satlzman says this one about Woodmont Health campus went too far. Woodmont Officials declined to talk on camera but they did tell me they filed a complain with Boonville Police after Boonville Watch stated a resident escaped the facility. Those working at Woodmont say they got a lot of calls from concerned family members and that particular post was far from funny. "That's the one that really triggered I think the awareness and everybody's running around trying to find out if this is really going on," Saltzman explains. "As a nurse, I can tell you that resident elopement isn't something that you really want to joke about because it's scary," says Erin Whitehouse, who "likes" the page. No laws are being broken and Boonville Watch tells us to take these posts seriously is the fault of readers. But some say they're unamused and joking about safety is not worth the chuckle. Boonville Watch says it too has received complaints about the Woodmont post, administrators say they do apologize and have taken away privileges of those who wrote it. Here is the Page's entire comments to recent opposition..In response to the danger of this page, I find that to be false. If people will click the link on the page that reads "about", it clearly states that we are a satire news page. In our long description it clearly states that we are false. The stuff that we post is so preposterous that to believe it is the fault of the reader. There is no way that this stuff is happening. Some of our stuff is true, but most is fictional. I have been getting a lot of complaints about a couple posts involving a local convalescent center. Our site was hacked and they were taken down as soon as I seen them. A couple of members who were administrators have had their administration status terminated. We apologize for this incident! We are here to break up peoples day, give them a laugh, tell them about traffic problems, and report public interest information for Boonville and Warrick County. On the day of October 30th 1938 Orsen Wells went through a similar incident with the "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast. With fictional news shows on television, in print, and in other media, I would like to think that we have evolved as a community, as a country, and as human beings to be able to decipher fact from fiction. If it sounds like it is a bogus report, then it is. Have an open mind, have a laugh, and relax. This is for entertainment only. I sincerely apologize for this grave inconvenience.
