How To Give Your Bathroom A DIY Makeover

A decade ago, when the housing market was slightly healthier than it is today, replacing your bathroom suite ? particularly if it was in a dated and unfashionable hue such as olive, champagne or duck-egg blue ? was an investment that could add an estimated ?8,000 to the value of your home. In 2012, experts assessed that the value added by installing a new bathroom suite had dropped to around ?3,000.

A new bathroom suite can be obtained inexpensively from larger DIY outlets and warehouses, and replacement is definitely worthwhile if your existing suite is damaged or seriously outdated but bear in mind that, unless you are an expert plumber and fitter, you?re going to need professional help to install it.

An easier and less expensive alternative is to give your existing suite and bathroom a complete makeover. Refreshing your bathroom in this way can still add value to your home if done sufficiently well, as well as improving your living conditions.

Here are some easy to implement and inexpensive improvements that can bring new life and value to an old bathroom:

Change your flooring

If your bathroom has a carpeted floor, replace it. Carpet in bathrooms is unhygienic and soon becomes dirty. An inexpensive and attractive alternative is cork floor tiles which are easy to fit and maintain and provide a naturally warm surface to stand on.

Use tile paint to brighten your bathroom

You don?t necessarily need to retile a tiled bathroom in order to give it a makeover. Mould resistant and waterproof tile paint is available in a wide range of colours and can transform your bathroom, giving a fresh, professional-looking finish.

Re-do your caulking

The flexible sealant around sinks, baths and showers can become dirty, discoloured and mouldy over time. Stripping out old caulking and replacing it with brilliant white or clear flexible sealant can make a surprising difference to your bathroom?s appearance.

Re-enamel your bath

Enamel baths that have become chipped, worn or scuffed with age can be rescued and made to look almost-new again by re-enamelling them. It is possible to do this yourself relatively inexpensively, but if you?re in any doubt about getting the best result have your bath re-enamelled by an expert: it will still work out cheaper than buying and installing a new bath.

Make use of mirrors

Bathroom mirrors are both functional and decorative and their ability to rejuvenate and brighten a bathroom should not be underestimated. Placing a large mirror or using mirrored bathroom tiles where they will reflect light from a bathroom window can make a small bathroom look more spacious and will make the most of any available light. Creating one or more mirror-tiled panel that can be installed anywhere in the bathroom is a simple and inexpensive project that can make a big difference to your bathroom.

Update your bathroom fixtures and fittings

Swapping old fittings for new, such as taps, showerheads, shower curtains and towel rails, and replacing or refurbishing a shabby bathroom cabinet or linen basket will provide an instant lift to the way your bathroom looks.

Re-grout your bathroom tiles

This is another one of those minor and inexpensive tasks that can magically transform the look of a bathroom. Old, dirty and mildewed tile grout can be renewed with ease in the space of an afternoon with new, brilliant white grout that will bring a fresher, cleaner aspect to the whole room.

Look after your loo

If your loo is in relatively good condition you should be able to get it looking great again by replacing the loo seat, and giving it a good treatment with limescale remover. If plumbing elements such as the ballfloat or valve are worn out, replacing them is neither difficult nor expensive. If, however, your loo is cracked or leaking or the plumbing is beyond satisfactory repair you are best advised to install a new loo; particularly if you are in the process of selling your home.

Even on a modest budget it?s possible to implement many, if not all, of these bathroom improvements to effect a makeover that will make a big, lasting and positive improvement which may add a little value to your home. Now all you need to do is to ensure that your revitalised bathroom is cleaned regularly to keep it looking good.
