The International Exhibition of Black Music is another French Season venture, this time at the MuseuMAfrika. I went along to the launch on 29 August 2012. It was well worth the visit and I will definitely go back again at least once or twice more.
So what is meant by ?black music?? The term here includes music from Africa, the Americas (both North and South), Europe and the Caribbean. It is a world-wide phenomenon, ?transcending all notions of ethnicity and nationalism?. The exhibition showcases black music as a full concept from African roots to blues, jazz, soul, funk, Caribbean and Latin American music.
The first room has 22 pillars paying tribute to the Legends of Black Music. Included is Elvis Presley. I query this. The curator, Marc Benaiche, explains how the roots of Preley?s music were in black music.
The other rooms focus on ?Mama Africa?, ?The Birth of a Black Atlantic?, ?Sacred Rites and Rhythms?, ?The Black Americas? and the ?Global Mix.? I cannot wait to get back to see more of this exhibition. I ran out of time while in the second room and I hadn?t fully explored the first room yet.
Advertising for the venture says it is a groundbreaking interactive audio/visual experience showcasing the evolution of black musical culture throughout the ages and continents. It is indeed. There are over 100 interactive points where one hits the button on one?s communication device, a Samsung smart phone, and one is rewarded with audio-visual wealth. There is thirteen hours of audio-visual clips, so you won?t see it all in one or two visits. Fortunately the exhibition runs for four months, until the end of the year (12 December) Every Sunday entrance to MuseuMAfrika is free, though it is R40 on other days.
The exhibition has already been seen in Dakar, Senegal and on the Reunion Island. It will travel to Brazil when it leaves Johannesburg. It will become a permanent exhibition in Brazil. I recommend this highly.
As part of the event there are two workshops, ?Filming Music? and ?Using Digital Arts in Culture? and a conference entitled ?Music and Pictures ? New rules, new markets.? running from 4-10 September, 2012. Their website is www.blackmusicworldwide.com.
