How young is to young for private music lessons? And enter to win a ...

My children love music, yet they aren?t in any formal lessons.? For my four year old, I?ve often wondered if I should put her in music lessons.? A few weeks ago I was in a quest to put her in something.? We tried gymnastics, soccer, tumbling, and dancing but she just wanted to stick to me like glue and was adamant she didn?t want to do it.

Who can blame her though?? She?s been through a lot with the legal drama that happened last year with her father and I, so it?s not a surprise to me that she would be experiencing separation anxiety.? Starting anything new for her, especially for art or music is something that needs to be handled delicately.? Yet knowing her personality, once she gets into a routine and a comfort zone she loves doing it.

So I went on the quest to determine how soon is too soon for her to start piano lessons.? She has a toy piano and loves visiting the music store where she can look at the piano.? I never took piano lessons, I taught myself and my father learned music by ear.

How soon is too soon?

I began researching the Suzuki method of music development created by Japanese violinist?Shinichi Suzuki.? Suzuki based his approach on the belief that

?Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited.?

For the Suzuki method, children can begin learning this method at age 3 or 4, while other sites I have read about say formal music training or private lessons should not begin until age 7.? I think what makes the Suzuki method different is that incorporates parents early in the learning process.

While it was originally developed for the violin, materials have been made for other instruments such as: viola, cello, bass, piano, flute, harp, guitar and recorder.
