An advocate, or an advocacy group, can be loosely defined as a person or a group that will support your cause help you in achieving your goal. Most often an advocate is used when you don?t have the resources or ability to sufficiently support your own cause.

There was a story recently featured on a local news station close to where I grew up in Huntington, WV about a young girl named Ariel Depp. Ariel is a high school student in Kanawha County and she is deaf. Although there is a high school in her district that sits adjacent to her parent?s home, she must attend a high school that is two hours away in order to be able to work with an interpreter that can facilitate Ariel?s needs for learning. Ariel and her family had requested that the school board provide an interpreter at the high school that Ariel should be going to, but they denied the family?s request. Ariel?s struggle with deafness is not her only obstacle. The family explained that transportation is a struggle, as they cannot afford a vehicle and that prevents Ariel from receiving after school tutoring or allowing her to participate in after-school activities.

Ariel?s situation is not much different from situations that many in our elder community are facing. Her disability of being born without the capability to hear and the elder community?s disabilities related to the aging process are often unavoidable, irreversible, and life altering.

In Joyce McKinney, Morris has found a fittingly weird and funny muse.

Errol Morris is a genius, a gifted documentarian who has made better movies than "Tabloid," but none so entertaining.

Though the events Tabloid recounts took place in the pre-digital age, the film also functions as a kind of prehistory of modern celebrity culture and tabloid journalism.

Morris's subject is sexual fantasy and a particular kind of American stupidity-the ability to substitute self-justification for self-knowledge. His tone is merry.

It is quite simply one of the craziest stories ever told, made all the crazier by the fact that it's true. Or at least some version of it is true.

Tabloid, Errol Morris' latest wild and woolly portrait of human self-delusion, is a scandal-sheet dream come to life.

A lot of fun; Morris himself is clearly unconvinced about Joyce -- and no wonder -- but she's a funny woman and hers is a ripping yarn if ever there was one.

Expertly guided by Errol Morris, and featuring a wholly compelling subject, this is a fascinating exploration of truth and memory.

Errol Morris hits the doco jackpot with a story that is both resoundingly human and resoundingly ironic about an ex beauty queen with a shady past who falls in love with Kirk Anderson, a young man whose strict religion forbids sex

A scandal involving a beauty queen, sex-in-chains, a religious cult, kidnapping and the tabloids are the ingredients of this bizarre true story that gets more fantastic as it goes along

Tabloid is a documentary that proves conclusively that the truth really is stranger than fiction.

Any film that elicits wide-eyed comments like, "What a story!" afterward is inherently successful.

On first look, Errol Morris' documentary appears to tell McKinney's story, drawing from the story reported by British tabloids in 1977. But it's also about truth and storytelling more broadly, the ways stories escape their tellers.

If "Tabloid" feels like a minor Morris work compared to "The Fog of War" or "Mr. Death," it is still entertaining, with a sly sense of humor and an empathetic eye for the bizarre that harkens back to earlier movies like "Gates of Heaven."

You may see -- and perhaps already have seen -- better documentaries this year than Errol Morris' Tabloid, but I doubt you'll see a more entertaining one.

Tabloid is a nice commentary on [Errol Morris'] particular style of 'truth-telling' and objectivity. In the end, we're all lying simply by telling our version of the truth.

Morris has found a real character in McKinney, but to what end, I couldn't say.

"Tabloid" is tantalizing, but like yesterday's headlines, it's a fleeting flirtation.

It's a titillating yarn told with verve, but it doesn't shed much light on how tabloids create and encourage such stories, nor does it, finally, tell us much about human nature -- other than, perhaps, to illustrate an extreme case of it.

The celebrated filmmaker has created a meta-tabloid of sorts, surrendering to the idea that the truth is absurdly unknowable.

Morris compellingly unfolds the story and clearly means for us to see our own untoward qualities writ large in Joyce and the circus surrounding her.

Fascinating, whimsically humorous and poignant, all at once.

Obama U.N. Speech -- 'Peace is Hard' (ContributorNetwork)

President Barack Obama delivered an address to the U.N. General Assembly that was designed, in part, to repair the damage caused by last year's address to the U.N. General Assembly. The theme of the speech was "Peace is hard."

The statement would seem to be obvious, but Obama, correctly, believed that it had to be explained to the delegates at the General Assembly. Peace is not the absence of war, he suggested, nor can it be obtained by platitudes or simple agreements. Obama came very close to the position that peace has to be established and maintained by strength.

Obama offered an example Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, the other countries racked by the "Arab Spring." and the recent execution of Osama bin Laden by Navy SEALs. In each case it was American strength, moral and actual, that created peace and a chance at least for freedom, according to Obama.

Mind, there is every potential for most of these venues to go south very quickly. Turkey, for instance, is becoming more aggressive against Israel and is creating alliances among Sunni Muslin states such as Egypt, partly with a few of countering Shiite Iran.

This will be bitter news to the Palestinians who seem to have concluded that they can take a short cut to their aspirations by U.N. fiat.

Obama reminded the General Assembly (and also Jewish voters who are currently turning from him in droves) that America's alliance with Israel is unshakeable. He may not believe it, based on previous behavior, but the election in New York Nine has focused his attention/

Obama concluded his speech by touching on nuclear proliferation and a few other subjects, but the point about Palestinian statehood had been made.

Court nears seating jury in Jackson doc case

LOS ANGELES?? Potential jurors in the trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death have been asked about their impressions of the pop superstar.

A defense attorney for Dr. Conrad Murray asked a group of 74 potential jurors whether they thought Jackson was child-like and could not make decisions for himself. No one indicated they thought of Jackson in that way.

Bailiffs marched 84 potential jurors into Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor's courtroom Friday for in-person questioning. Ten were dismissed after stating they could no longer serve on the case.

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff also told the group that the trial would focus on part of Jackson's life.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and could face four years in prison and loss of his medical license if convicted.

Human genetics study identifies the most common cause of ALS and dementia

Scientists have made an exciting breakthrough in unraveling the genetic basis of two debilitating neurodegenerative disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Two independent studies, published online this week by Cell Press in the journal Neuron, identify a new human genetic mutation as the most common cause of ALS and FTD identified to date. This mutation explains at least a third of all familial cases of ALS and FTD within the European population. The research provides key insight into ALS and FTD and may pave the way for development of therapeutic strategies for these currently incurable diseases.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, causes destruction of neurons that control voluntary movement. ALS is characterized by a progressive paralysis that often leads to death from respiratory failure within a few years of diagnosis. FTD, the second most common cause of early-onset dementia, is associated with degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain and leads to a dramatic deterioration in personality, language and behavior. There have been suggestions that these two disorders share some underlying genetic features.

About 10% of ALS cases and about 50% of FTD cases are thought to be inherited, and, although multiple genes have been linked with the disorders, much of the genetic risk has remained unexplained. "Each new gene implicated in the etiology of ALS or FTD provides fundamental insights into the cellular mechanisms underlying neuron degeneration, as well as facilitating disease modeling and the design and testing of targeted therapeutics," explains Dr. Bryan J. Traynor from the National Institutes of Health who is an author of one of the studies. "Identification of new genes that cause ALS or FTD is of great significance."

Recent research has linked a region on chromosome 9, called 9p21, with both ALS and FTD. Dr. Traynor's group performed an exhaustive next generation genetic analysis of this region in patients with 9p21-associated ALS or FTD, including the group of Finnish ALS patients that had previously been used to identify the association with 9p21. A second research group, led by Dr. Rosa Rademakers from the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, performed a similar analysis using a large family with ALS and FTD linked to chromosome 9p21.

Both groups discovered a "repeat expansion" within the non-coding region of C9ORF72, a gene whose function is not known. This mutation argues that both ALS and FTD are diseases caused by defects in RNA metabolism. This idea is in line with other recent work in ALS, FTD and neurodegenerative diseases more broadly stressing RNA-driven disease pathology.

The researchers searched for clinical and pathological characteristics associated with the mutation. "Our findings suggest multiple potential disease mechanisms associated with this repeat expansion," says Dr. Rademakers. "For example, we found evidence of a previously described process where the expansion region accumulates inside the neurons as abnormal structures called RNA foci that are likely to promote disease pathogenesis. Further molecular studies are needed to explore how these mechanisms contribute to neurodegeneration."

Taken together, the findings of both studies suggest that the repeat expansion in C9ORF72 is a major cause of an unprecedented proportion of both sporadic and familial FTD and ALS cases. The mutation explains nearly half of all cases in Finland alone and at least a third of all familial FTD and ALS cases in Europeans. Importantly, the mutation was also associated with a number of non-inherited cases of ALS and FTD. "With this discovery we can now explain nearly all of familial ALS disease in Finland, which has the highest incidence of ALS in the world. In the longer term, the identification of the genetic lesion underlying chromosome 9p21-linked ALS and FTD, together with the observed high frequency in these patient populations, makes it an ideal target for drug development aimed at amelioration of the disease process," concludes Dr. Traynor.

It gave me time to assess their bikes, their gear, their clothing, all in an effort to determine if we have comparable mountain biking skills, if I really should have caught and passed them earlier.. but most importantly, if we were close in age. That?s why I wanted to pass on the right: at registration, competitors? ages were marked on our right calves.

Before you judge me as shallow, consider my motive. It?s all part of the game: mentally, passing someone younger would give me a boost. Passing someone the same age but who was well-equipped, gear-wise, could also be considered a win. But if they were on their kids? Huffy bikes and wearing Sketchers, not so much. Get it? Of course, passing a guy of any condition or age is always a major moment of excitement, mostly because the men started well before the women in the swim (and I loved that an entire wave of them had the pink bathing caps on!). Yes, I passed a couple on the bike, and a couple more running. Score!

The mental game has so many facets for me. I?m racing against myself primarily, and my inner gremlins are my biggest obstacles (thoughts like ?why can?t I get my legs to go faster? I must have some serious degenerative disease that is keeping me from moving them, like in a bad dream? and ?I suck because I didn?t get out and run more because I had to work so much last week because the bills are stacking up..?). Turning down those thoughts by focusing on the competition is so much more motivating and positive.

Yet I relapse at times, too. During the final phase, the trail run, one of the two mountain biking women had gotten in front of me again and she turned to a fellow competitor on the trail for a momentary chat. Hey, wait a minute, I thought. We?re all the same age, playing in the same sandbox, maybe I should be social too? but then would I find out that they?re not the secret superheroes I?ve built them up to be? What if I catch up to them and find out they?re just from the neighborhood and decided to do the race on a lark? That would be so deflating.

Still, I wanted someone to tell me if I?d gotten chocolate Gu all over my face (as I suspected, trying to consume it on the bumpy bike ride). That just wouldn?t look good in the post-race Flickr photos, you know, girlfriend?
