Ashton Kutcher Chokes Up Talking About Steve Jobs On 'The Tonight Show' (VIDEO)

Ashton Kutcher proved his passion for the role of Steve Jobs in the upcoming biopic, "Jobs," during his appearance on "The Tonight Show. He even seemed to choke up while talking about the role, and a big regret he had related to the man he was portraying on the screen.

Kutcher said that about six months before Jobs died, he had an opportunity to meet him. "I was working that day and couldn?t go, and in hindsight I look back and think, I had the opportunity to meet the Leonardo DaVinci of our generation, and I missed it," Kutcher lamented.

He said that incident weighed on him, and affected his decision to take on the role. "I?ll never forget the moment I heard that he died," Kutcher said. "I realized I?d taken him for granted, and taken for granted the contribution that he actually gave to society, and I actually had a real emotional moment.?

To take on the role of someone he admired so much, Kutcher said he studied Jobs' walk, stare, diet and emotions. He even fired his own employees to emulate Jobs.

Fans can see his take when "Jobs" hits theaters on August 16. Some critics think the movie doesn't dig deep enough, but most seem to agree that Kutcher does well in the role.

In keeping with the spirit of Steve Jobs and his visionary nature when it came to technology, "Jobs" became the first movie trailer ever to be on Instagram.

What is it like to be Muslim in Congress?

The Fine Print

Keith Ellison stands out on Capitol Hill.

The Minnesota Democrat is the first Muslim elected to Congress, and now is only one of two. He leads a progressive caucus in a Republican-controlled House of Representatives. And he?s not afraid to break out the guitar that he keeps in his office, even playing a few chords of a song for his interview with ?The Fine Print.?

When it comes to his religion, Ellison says his fellow members of Congress have generally been respectful but that there have been ?a few crazy incidents.?

?Recently, you know, a member said Muslim Americans are not condemning terrorism enough,? Ellison says, referring to a comment made by Rep. Mike Pompeo, R?Kan., that implied that Muslims were being ?potentially complicit? in acts of terror if they did not speak out against them.

?And I said, 'well, let me guarantee you, Muslims are condemning terrorism every day all the time ...' and I gave him a whole list, and he said, 'Thanks for telling me, I didn't know, I won't be saying that again,'? Ellison says.

As Muslims across the world celebrate the month of Ramadan, Ellison says he doesn?t ?agonize? over fasting from sunrise to sunset in observance of the month considered holy in Islam.

?Ramadan is a wonderful time of year for me,? Ellison says.? ?It?s the time to reflect. ... Your hunger is supposed to remind you that there are people who are fasting involuntarily all over this world.?

But in order to keep up with his busy Congressional schedule, Ellison says he does try to limit his physical activity.

?I think what you do is you dial your energy level back just a tad,? he said. ?Instead of running, you walk -- you know, stuff like that.?

Ellison, who was elected in 2006, is among the most progressive members of Congress and serves as co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.? He says he?s proud of the progressive issues that President Obama has been able to accomplish during a time of deep divisions on Capitol Hill.

?People wanted to do comprehensive health care and this president got it done,? Ellison says. ?This president speaks up for a increase in the minimum wage, and is a real champion of immigration reform.?

Asked if Obama has been enough of liberal, Ellison replies that he instead views him as a centrist.

?You look at poll data and things that are considered liberal that Americans want by large margins: background checks on gun purchases ... raise the minimum wage,? Ellison says. ?All types of things that the American people are very strongly in favor of in large numbers, uh and ... for him to say he wants those things is a centrist position.?

To hear more of the interview with Ellison, and to hear him play a few chords on his guitar, check out this episode of ?The Fine Print.?

Ubuntu Edge pricing drops to $625 minimum on Indiegogo after initial sellout

Ubuntu drops Edge pricing to $625 minimum on Indiegogo after initial sellout

After all 5,000 Ubuntu Edge smartphones sold out on their lowest $600 Indiegogo pricing tier, Canonical has added three new lower pledge levels. Initially, those who missed out on the one-day-only offer would've needed to cough up $830, but there are now $625, $675 and $725 rungs prior to that price, each with 1,250 of the linux-coated handsets available. Meanwhile, the counter at the original $830 second level -- which had already been in the hundreds -- has been reset, with Canonical promising it would "refund the difference at the end of the campaign so you won't lose out." That presumably means it's moved those buyers to a lower tier, but it promised to contact them directly with more information. We're not sure if a slowdown in pledges on the $32 million campaign provoked the move, but we've reached out to Canonical for more information.

Oil price falls

Oil price falls

NEW YORK

Oil fell Monday after the U.S. government said sales of previously occupied homes dipped in June.

Meanwhile, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. stayed at $3.67 a gallon over the weekend after rising steadily for two weeks.

Benchmark crude oil dropped $1.14 to finish at $106.91 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Sales of previously occupied homes in the U.S. slipped 1.2 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.08 million. Any sign that the U.S. economic recovery is slowing can depress oil prices.

Oil is still up more than $13 a barrel since June 21, underpinned by sharp declines in U.S. stockpiles and concerns of supply disruptions in the Middle East.

Some analysts, however, say the fundamental rules of supply and demand alone do not justify the rise, and speculators also are pushing the price higher.

?While crude-oil stocks have declined for three weeks in a row, fundamentals in the gasoline and distillates markets appear less supportive,? said a report from JBC Energy in Vienna. ?Stock levels for oil products are in line or above the five-year average, and domestic demand is anything but impressive.?

98% 20 Feet From Stardom

All Critics (67) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (65) | Rotten (1)

The movie takes its cues from Standing in the Shadows of Motown, another act of pop-culture revisionism that tried to give musical credit where it was due.

Just about everything in this movie is right. And anybody who gives a rip about unsung heroines of popular music and giving credit when credit's overdue had better come up with a good excuse not to see it.

You may never hear the Rolling Stones's Gimme Shelter the same way again after hearing Jagger's and Clayton's separate accounts of the recording of the song.

The enthusiasm and love of music on display is just unavoidable. "20 Feet" may not get the whole story, but it gets some good ones.

Music documentarian Morgan Neville uses a mix of live interviews and archival footage to let the singers, and their music, tell their stories of vocal triumph and thwarted ambition.

You know all those doo-doo-doos and whoa-whoas-whoas you hear in pop hits? Without them, supplied by the likes of Darlene Love and Merry Clayton, you likely wouldn't be singing along to the songs you hear on your car radio.

20 Feet From Stardom will be highly entertaining to anyone who ever let a needle drop into a '70s-era groove.

Neville does a good job of highlighting songs that are especially characterized by backup singers, like Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side,' and introducing us to some of the 'unsung' talent that made those hits possible.

This fantastic glimpse into the lives of background singers, old and new, directed by Morgan Neville, is completely mesmerizing.

It is a total pleasure, a rare treat, to listen and watch old footage of these indispensable performers belt out their melodies and harmonies. They are truly pioneers that helped shape the world of music for generations to come.

This is a fascinating doc for pop, soul, R&B and rock fans, for it peels back the often unfair layers of the music business like the skins on an onion. Sometimes, it'll make you cry to witness how terribly these talents were treated.

It's important to finally put names and faces to the voices of these women because, without them, countless songs would sound horrible.

Neville's greatest strength is as a historian, able to sort through a wealth of details to find the pieces he needs to tell one clear, compelling story.

Salutes songs that wouldn't work without the back-ups and, in effect, turn us all into back-up singers.

Not the deepest documentary you're likely to come across this year -- in fact, it's not deep at all -- but it may well be the most enjoyable one.

The transcendent joy and agonizing heartbreak of making music - and trying to make it in music - have seldom been captured as vividly as in "20 Feet from Stardom."

If music has the power to connect, "Twenty Feet From Stardom" shows it's those backup voices making the connection.

Lovers of classic R&B and rock will never get tired of revisiting this movie and its bonanza of performance footage.

For once, the spotlight shines on these brilliant women who spent most of their careers on the outskirts of fame with minimal fortune to show for their efforts.

Jubilant, informative, and teeming with iconic music, 20 Feet from Stardom is a riveting sit, blasting a spotlight on singers worthy of the intense heat.

AG strongly criticizes stand-your-ground laws

(AP) ? Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday strongly criticized stand-your-ground laws that allow a person who believes he is in danger to use deadly force in self-defense.

Holder said he was concerned about the case of Trayvon Martin, in which George Zimmermann was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges, and said the Justice Department has an open investigation into what happened.

But he added: "Separate and apart from the case that has drawn the nation's attention, it's time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense and sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhoods."

In an address to an NAACP convention, Holder said it's time to question laws that "senselessly expand the concept of self-defense."

The attorney general said the country must take a hard look at laws that contribute to "more violence than they prevent."

Such laws "try to fix something that was never broken," he said.

Florida is among the states that have stand-your-ground laws, and the issue played a role in the prosecution of Zimmerman, whose acquittal has spurred calls for the U.S. Justice Department to file criminal civil rights charges against the former neighborhood watch volunteer.

Legal experts say a federal case would be a difficult challenge, with prosecutors having to prove that Zimmerman was motivated by racial animosity to kill Martin, who was 17 when he was shot during the fight with Zimmerman in February 2012.

On Monday, Holder had called the killing a "tragic, unnecessary shooting death" and urged the nation to speak honestly about complicated and emotionally charged issues.

On Tuesday, Holder seemed to be shifting away from the Martin case to one of those issues ? the debate over the stand-your-ground laws.

"There has always been a legal defense for using deadly force if ? and the 'if' is important ? no safe retreat is available," Holder told the NAACP.

"But we must examine laws that take this further by eliminating the common sense and age-old requirement that people who feel threatened have a duty to retreat, outside their home, if they can do so safely," he said.

In his comments referencing the Zimmerman case, Holder offered a story from his own personal experience ? describing how when he was a young black man his father had told him how to interact with the police, what to say and how to conduct himself if he was ever stopped or confronted in a way he thought was unwarranted.

"I'm sure my father felt certain ? at the time ? that my parents' generation would be the last that had to worry about such things for their children," Holder told the NAACP convention. "Trayvon's death last spring caused me to sit down to have a conversation with my own 15-year-old son, like my dad did with me. This was a father-son tradition I hoped would not need to be handed down."

U.S. to Russia: Turn over Snowden or risk 'long-term problems'

The White House left no doubt on Tuesday that American patience with Russia playing host to NSA leaker Edward Snowden is wearing thin.

?The Russian government has an opportunity here to work with us,? press secretary Jay Carney told reporters at his daily briefing. ?This should not be something that causes long-term problems for U.S.-Russian relations.?

Washington and Moscow have been ?engaging on a number of important issues, both economic and security related issues, and we want to continue that relationship unimpeded by this issue,? Carney added. By turning over Snowden, or at least expelling him, Russia could ?resolve this situation that they have been dealing with now for three weeks.?

Could the dispute over Snowden lead Obama to cancel his planned attendance at the Group of 20 summit in Russia? Carney did not close out that possibility. "The president intends to travel to Russia in September for the G20 summit. And I don't have any further announcements."

By the standards of diplo-speak, that?s nearly a ?frank and candid exchange of views? ? code for an all out verbal fight.

?Our interest has always been in seeing him expelled from Russia and returned to the United States,? Carney told reporters.

?He should not be allowed to engage in further international travel except as necessary to return to the United States,? Carney said of Snowden, who is regarded in some quarters as a whistle-blower for disclosing the incredibly broad sweep of NSA spying on American citizens.

?He is not a human rights activist, he is not a dissident,? Carney insisted. ?He is accused of leaking classified information, he?s been charged with three felony counts related to the leaking of classified information. And for those reasons he should be returned to the United States.?

Carney's comments came after Snowden's lawyer asked Russia to give the former NSA contractor-turned-secrets-spiller temporary asylum, saying his client could face persecution and even torture or death.

Carney repeatedly underlined that Snowden, if handed over, ?should be afforded every bit of due process here in the United States.?

ISS Astronauts Have a Spacewalking Close Call

Astronauts train for their spacewalks at the International Space Station while submerged in Houston in a six-million-gallon water tank, learning to better understand and cope with the free-fall environment of orbital flight. But they expect to leave all that water behind after launch.

Today at the ISS, however, an unusual and serious water leak threatened to engulf European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano, nearly blinding him inside his helmet and forcing NASA to cut short their maintenance spacewalk after just 1 hour and 32 minutes. Parmitano made it back inside the station safely, and Tuesday afternoon NASA officials told the media they were still investigating how this water leak could have happened.

About an hour into the EVA (extravehicular activity), Parmitano first reported water building up inside his helmet, spreading on the back of his head. "I don't understand where it's coming from," Parmitano said. Initially, both he and partner Chris Cassidy suspected the source was a 32-oz. drink bag, which rides inside the front torso of the spacesuit, its drinking valve positioned for sipping just above the suit's neck ring. But Parmitano, an Italian air force pilot and engineer, reported that he felt the water slowly expanding, threatening to envelop his head and face in a clinging, choking blanket of H2O. "I can still hear perfectly, but my head is really wet and I feel it increasing," Parmitano said.

In the free-fall of Earth orbit, water's surface tension, (the cohesive force that draws water molecules together) causes it to coalesce into a drifting blob. Once a globule strikes a surface, it clings to it and spreads, forming an enveloping film. I encountered this same phenomenon when working out vigorously on the shuttle's bicycle ergometer: Perspiration clung to my neck and face, spreading into and stinging my eyes.

Of course, I had a towel ready to deal with too much sweat. Inside his sealed helmet, Parmitano could not wipe the water from his face. Shaking his head might throw some of the clinging water off his face, but it might then adhere to the inside of the helmet visor, cutting off his vision. And drifting water could pose a choking hazard should Parmitano inhale droplets into his lungs.

As the seconds went on, the accumulating water kept spreading toward Parmitano's face. "Now it's in my eyes," he reported. Ground controllers reacted quickly, ordering the pair to end the spacewalk and return to the airlock.

In just the few minutes it took for the Italian astronaut to reach the Quest airlock, water had seeped into his communications headphones and microphone. Unable to talk to Parmitano by radio during their repressurization from vacuum, Cassidy directed, "Squeeze my hand if you're fine." Radioing Mission Control, Cassidy added, "He looks fine. He looks miserable, but he's okay."

Using an expedited suit-doffing procedure that skipped some routine steps to save time, the pair's ISS crewmates quickly equalized the air pressure between Quest and the station interior. Within ten minutes, they had Parmitano out of his helmet, toweling him dry. In the hours after the spacewalk, both crewmembers reported no ill effects.

Late on Tuesday, NASA flight controllers continued their search for the source of the water leak. The drink bag, the initial suspect during the EVA, doesn't hold enough water to have doused Parmitano so thoroughly. But the suit's water supply system, which circulates chilled water through an astronaut's "long underwear" cooling garment and feeds a sublimator heat exchanger, contains about a gallon. That's more than enough to have caused the flood in Parmitano's helmet, estimated at about 1 to 1.5 liters.

ISS mission management team leader Kenneth Todd, joined by flight director David Korth and EVA officer Karina Eversley, confirmed the seriousness of the problem at an afternoon press conference. Korth noted that EVAs are already dangerous. For Parmitano, this experience was like plunging one's head into a sloshing fishbowl, with no way to get it off.

Eversley agreed that the choking hazard from inhaled water was real, and it eventually caused flight controllers to terminate the spacewalk. Todd said he was proud of the way the ISS team handled the near-emergency, one they had never encountered before. "The crew was cool and expert in reporting and diagnosing the problem. Our training on the ground paid off, and the team kept its eye on the main objective"?the crew's safety.

Planetary scientist and veteran astronaut Tom Jones recounted his three spacewalks at the International Space Station in Sky Walking: An Astronaut's Memoir.

Fab Dumps Flash Sales Alerts For Pinterest-Like Follower Model To Market Design

tumblr_inline_mpyrp1lLlk1qz4rgpLate last year I was chatting to a VC about Fab.com. He was just shaking his head. Why the scepticism, I asked? "Look, I just can't see how it's sustainable. They've raised an awful lot of money, but flash sales are just going to burn them to death." And sure enough today has come an announcement from Fab that "Starting today, Fab is no longer sending daily flash-sales emails." These changes begin rolling out on Fab Europe at 8am CET today and then in Fab North America at 8am ET, according to CEO Jason Goldberg in a blog post today.

A very Bat tale: the nocturnal animal feted at Nixon County Park

Bats will not get in your hair, do not carry lice and do not suck your blood.

Bat enthusiast Linette Mansberger, of New Oxford, holds up a stuffed toy bat to emphasize the size of a Giant Flying Fox bat at Richard Nixon County Park Sunday. YORK DAILY RECORD/SUNDAY NEWS - PAUL KUEHNEL (Paul Kuehnel)

Bats are our friends of the night.

That was the message Linette Mansberger, a county parks volunteer, brought to an audience of about 30 Sunday at Nixon County Park in Springfield Township.

"They don't understand them and believe a lot of the myths they know about them, but bats are fascinating," Mansberger said.

One morning, Mansberger, a retired kindergarten teacher, discovered a bat in her classroom and her fascination with bats was born.

"It was the cutest thing and I fell in love," she said. "I am a bat enthusiast. I love bats and I love telling people about bats. I want to get you to appreciate bats and understand how important they are," Mansberger said.

It is probably no surprise that she loves bats, Mansberger said, since when she was growing up, Batman was her favorite cartoon character and "Dark Shadows" her favorite TV show.

Bats are important as pollinators and insect eaters, she said. A single little brown bat can eat one thousand mosquitoes in one night and bats have been known to fly up to 25 miles in search of food.

The make their homes in old barns, and yes, in belfries and attics, under bridges and in caves. You can try building a bat house but they seem to be pretty choosy, Mansberger said.

A bat has a lifespan of 30 years, but a deadly disease known as white-nose syndrome, is wiping out bat colonies at an alarming rate, she said.

"It is important we do our best to save as many bats as possible because of the things that are happening to bats these days," Mansberger said.

Bats will not get in your hair, do not carry lice, do not suck your blood and do not multiply rapidly. Their young, known as pups, are often raised in maternity colonies and each mother uses smell and sound to find her offspring at feeding time.

Tyra Hawkins, 5, of Jefferson, sometimes sees bats along the York County Rail Trail and is not afraid of them. She brought her best friend, her aunt, Kristy Josephs, to learn about bats.

"I am terrified of them and would never have bought our house near Raab Park if I had known about the bats there, but I am going to get over my fear. That is why I am here today. I can do this," Josephs said.

Cameron Glatfelter, 9, of Jackson Township, attended the program with his grandparents, Lee and Bertha Slagle.

"I understand more about bats," he said.

Lucy Wallick, 6, of Etters checked out the books about bats that were part of Mansberger's display and said she plans to visit the library to find those books and more on the subject of bats.

If you want to see bats, simply wait until night time and check out the nearest street lamp or dusk-to-dawn light, Mansberger said.

What's on iPhone: Runaway: A Road Adventure Review ? Solve the mystery of the crucifix

Now-a-days, my favorite genre, or maybe yours too, has become the Point and Click games. Combine the all-time hot puzzles with unique graphics & strong backbone of a mysterious story, and you?re looking at an instant hit. Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery, Fetch, Mystery Lighthouse etc are some that deserves special mention.

Runaway series has typically been such games with cartoony graphicsand ?following the story of ??the most famous couples in the history of adventure games?, Brian and Gina. Runaway: A Road Adventure is no different, other than the fact that a Crucifix is the culprit here.

Brian is a nerdy boy about to live his dream in the University of California. Meantime somewhere else, a Crucifix has been stolen from the Mafia. Gina gets it from her detective father and while fleeing, meets with an accident with Brian?s car.?This unfortunate point marks the crossing of two unrelated lives and triggers the nail biting sequences in Runaway: A Road Adventure.

I hope you?re familiar with the Point and Click gaming. In each level, you?ll find yourself deserted without any help. Scan your surroundings, collect useful items, combine them, use them and get things done.?Use your scientific knowledge, puzzle solving skills and most importantly, your common sense, to rescue Gina and solve the mystery surrounding the Crucifix.

I have been playing Runaway: A Road Adventure for quite sometime and I can say that it is really addictive, thanks to the mystery it builds up. But there are some drawbacks I noticed. A speedup button is needed, especially while walking long distances. Also, the sequence of doing actions need to be exact for things to work, which is really annoying. (You?ll realize these, once you start playing)

The above faults aren?t any deal breakers and I?m sure the developers will be working on them. On the whole, the gameplay in Runaway: A Road Adventure is very satisfying and worth the money you spend. Surely deserves a thumbs up.

18 killed in stampede at boxing match in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) ? At least 18 people were killed in a stadium stampede after spectators rioted to protest a local boxer's loss in a championship match in eastern Indonesia, police said Monday.

The victims, mostly women, were trampled to death as about 1,500 spectators scrambled out the stadium to escape the riot that broke out just before midnight Sunday, said Lt. Col. Gede Sumerta Jaya, police spokesman in Papua province.

Kota Lama Sport Stadium in the town of Nabire had only two working exits.

Points awarded by a panel of judges decided the championship match for the Bupati Cup, or Regent Cup. The losing boxer's supporters threw chairs at the judges and the winner's supporters responded by throwing bottles and broken chairs, panicking people in the stadium, Jaya said.

He said 12 of the dead were women, and more than 40 other spectators were injured and hospitalized.

Police and soldiers were deployed to stop the fighting.

Nabire, about 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) east of Jakarta, is located on Cendrawasih Bay on the north coast of Papua.

Wilt Chamberlain's record blown by Washington Kastles

Wilt Chamberlain's Lakers won 33 games straight, a record now surpassed by the Washington Kastles. But surely Wilt Chamberlain would join the current Lakers in praising the new record-holders.

By Joseph White,?Associated Press / July 15, 2013

The Washington Kastles line up for the anthem before a World Team Tennis match against the Boston Lobsters, July 9 in Washington. The Kastles won 34 straight games, beating the record held by Wilt Chamberlain's Los Angeles Lakers.

Wilt Chamberlain, step aside. Martina Hingis and the rest of the Washington Kastles wasted no time putting on the red T-shirts, the ones that proclaim that they're now at the top of the list among the "longest winning streaks in major U.S. pro sports history."

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

And they even got congrats from the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Kastles of World Team Tennis won their 34th consecutive match Tuesday night, routing the Boston Lobsters 25-12. Their streak is one better than the storied run of the 1971-72 Lakers, a team that included Wilt?Chamberlain?and Jerry West.

"We made history. Tonight is magic," said coach Murphy Jensen, sporting a white hat with the number "34." "This experience has been beyond belief. These guys have made a masterpiece, and this team will never be forgotten."

Such hyperbole is a matter for debate, considering that the WTT typically isn't considered a "major" sports league and that its top players appear only in selected matches, creating an atmosphere more comparable to that of a fan-friendly minor league baseball team.

The Lakers, on the other hand, had an undisputed landmark achievement that continues to stand as the high-water mark for the NBA, NHL, NFL and Major League Baseball.

Still, winning 34 in a row on any level isn't easy. Among those tipping a hat to the Kastles was Lakers executive Jeanie Buss, who was involved with World TeamTennis in the 1970s as an executive for the Los Angeles Strings.

"Winning 33 consecutive games was an amazing accomplishment by our 1971-72 Lakers team, as evidenced by the fact that no other team has come close to reaching it for over 40 years now," Buss said in a written statement. "On behalf of the Buss family and the Lakers family, I want to congratulate the Washington Kastles, their players, and our good friends (WTT co-founder) Billie Jean King and (WTT Commissioner) Ilana Kloss on this milestone accomplishment of theirs."

The streak has brought invaluable publicity to a league that packs its entire season into a three-week span in July. Jensen's squad is 2-0 this season and is coming off back-to-back WTT titles, going undefeated both years. Washington's last loss came on July 22, 2010, also against the Lobsters. They've become the streamroller of the league.

I Bet I Can Create A 25 Million-Year-Old False Alarm, Says Biologist E.O. Wilson

The world's most famous ant-scholar likes to daydream. "So much good science ? and perhaps all of great science," he writes in his new book "has its roots in fantasy."

Here's his.

After seeing Jurassic Park, where scientists clone dinosaurs from the blood of ancient dino-biting mosquitoes,Wilson thought: Hmmm, that's a little far-fetched, but I bet I can do a version that might be "really and truly possible."

He was having lunch with the author of the film, Michael Crichton, (who also wrote The Andromeda Strain and TV's ER) when he outlined his plan. I can imagine Crichton leaning in, itchy with expectation. Nobody knows ants like Wilson. And Wilson likes to live dangerously (especially in his head).

Here's Wilson's idea.

For years, he'd worked at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology, which houses one of the greatest ant collections in the world. In his younger days, he'd done field work in the Dominican Republic, where he found a bunch of ants in amber. He brought his discoveries back to Cambridge and learned they were 25 million years old.

Twenty-five million years doesn't get us back to the age of the dinosaurs, (that's 100 million years ago) but still, it's a big jump, and when Wilson cracked open those glistening amber droplets, he found a bunch of ancient little lady ants, new to science, that he called Azteca alpha.

? What if I could create a 25 million-year-old false alarm?

He studied them, and found they most closely resembled a modern species found in Peru, southern Brazil, and perhaps Central America, called Azteca muelleri. This modern ant, Wilson told Crichton, appears "to be a direct evolutionary descendent or otherwise close relative of Azteca alpha," which means these modern ants may have a lot of behaviors in common with their great, great, great etc. grandmas.

And so ... ? (I imagine Crichton thinking ... )

Well, (I imagine Wilson answering), what if I could create a 25 million-year-old false alarm?

What?

These modern ants are well known for their alarm signals when their nests are invaded. As soon as an attack begins Azteca muelleri soldiers give off a shout (kind of like Paul Revere's "The British are coming! The British are coming!") ? which they do in antspeak, that is, with specific chemical smells. Their warning, Ed said, relies on "large quantities of pheromones, acrid-smelling terpenoids, which they release into the air to alarm nestmates."

Ed's Naughty Idea

Wilson's naughty idea assumed that the ancient ants stored the same pheromone in their bodies way back then. And he told Michael Crichton it might be possible to break into some of those still preserved amber droplets, surgically invade the ancient ant inside and "extract remnants of the [alarm] pheromone from Azteca alpha remains ... "

And then ... ?

Then he would take the extract to, say, southern Brazil, inject the smell into a modern nest and see if it set off the alarm, sending modern ants scurrying frantically to defend their nest ... the delicious part being, not only would it be amazing if the alarm still worked, but, as he told Crichton, "I could deliver a message from one ant colony to another across a span of 25 million years."

Cool idea, no?

Crichton wanted Wilson to do it. But Wilson said he didn't have the time, not then, but he might try later. Years passed. Crichton died in 2008. Wilson still hasn't found the time.

In his new book he says this experiment has a bit "too much of the circus trick and too little of real science" to be worth taking the trouble, but this is the same guy who, in the 1950s, having discovered the ant gland that produces odor trails, dabbed his finger with invisible ant attractant and wrote his name ? in longhand ? on his lab desk and then gleefully watched as thousands of ants rushed across his desk to spell "Ed Wilson" with their bodies.

Ed Wilson knows how to get silly. "Daydream a lot," he advises young scientists in his book. "Make it a practice to indulge in fantasy." So it'll happen. One day, one of his army of former students will say, "Oh, Ed, I'm going to Brazil," and Ed will close his eyes, and start smiling ...

For my favorite example of E.O. Wilson being bad, check out the time he dabbed a live ant with an "I'm dead" smell. The ant had a very peculiar day. We talked about it on All Things Considered in 2009. Wilson's new book is called Letters to a Young Scientist. It's a very personal (and therefore rich with autobiographical sketches from his boy scouting days, research trips, on-campus intrigues) aimed at any young college student thinking about a career in science.

Surviving copies of Magna Carta to be reunited for first time

By Adam Jourdan

LONDON (Reuters) - The four surviving original copies of Britain's Magna Carta, the document that first defined government powers as limited by law, will be brought together in 2015 for the first time to mark the charter's 800-year anniversary.

The British Library said on Monday the four documents, currently held by Lincoln Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral and two by the British Library, would be united at the national library in London for a three-day exhibition.

Originally published in 1215, Magna Carta, meaning "The Great Charter", was intended by then-King John to placate powerful English barons who were rebelling against him over unsuccessful foreign policies and rising taxes.

Written in Latin on sheepskin parchment, the charter limited King John's hitherto arbitrary powers by asserting for the first time that English royalty was to be subject to the law.

All but three of the Magna Carta's 63 clauses have now been repealed. Those that remain include one protecting the liberties of the English church, another confirming the privileges of the city of London, and the most famous clause concerning civil liberties and guaranteeing judgment through the law.

The text became the foundation for the English system of common law and remains an important cornerstone of the unwritten British constitution in its use to defend civil liberties.

Its principles are also echoed in the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

"(Magna Carta) is venerated around the world as marking the starting point for government under the law," Claire Breay, lead curator of medieval and earlier manuscripts at the British Library, said in a statement.

The 2015 event will give researchers and the public a chance to study the texts side-by-side to look for clues about the still-unknown authors of the work.

The British Library said that 1,215 members of the public would be chosen by ballot to receive free tickets to see the unified manuscripts.

"Bringing the four surviving manuscripts together for the first time will create a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for researchers and members of the public to see them in one place," said Breay.

MARIO ANZUONI / Reuters

Cast member Cory Monteith poses at the premiere of the second season of the television series "Glee" at Paramount studios in Los Angeles in this September 7, 2010, file photo.

Cory Monteith, the actor who found great fame in the hit series "Glee," was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver, British Columbia, police said late Saturday.

Monteith, 31, was found shortly after noon at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in downtown Vancouver, said Doug LePard, acting chief of Vancouver police.

LePard said Monteith checked into the room July 6 and was due to check out Saturday. When he missed his checkout time, staff went to the room and found his body.

LePard said that police believe Monteith had been with other people in his room on Friday night but that video and key fob entries showed he returned to his room alone early Saturday.

Police did not indicate a cause of death, but LaPard did say that according to all indications, there was no foul play. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday. LePard said family members had been notified.

Adam Shankman, who directed several episodes of "Glee," had spoken to the Monteith Saturday morning.

"I had several interactions with him yesterday where he said to me that he was feeling amazing, and he even said, 'I'm feeling fantastic again,'" Shankman told CNN. "So, like everybody else I am devastated and confused by what happened."

Word of Monteith's death spread quickly though social media; his co-star Dot Marie Jones (better known as coach Shannon Beiste to "Glee" fans) tweeted a sentiment that was echoed by many. "I have no words! My heart is broken. Cory was not only one hell of a friend he was one amazing man that I will hold close to my heart forever."

Although Monteith had some small roles before landing the part on "Glee," it was his turn on that show as the fresh-faced Finn Hudson that cemented his place in Hollywood. And while Finn might have made him a household name, Monteith was clear about the differences between his life and the character's.

"I'm not Finn Hudson," he said in a frank 2011 interview with Parade magazine. "I'm lucky on so many counts -- I'm lucky to be alive."

Moneith was alluding to his past history with substance abuse, which included, "anything and everything, as much as possible. I had a serious problem."

His struggles resurfaced in recent months; this spring, he checked into a treatment center for an addiction problem. Shortly after his stay there, Monteith appeared to be in good spirits, as he was spotted relaxing in Mexico with his girlfriend, fellow "Glee" co-star Lea Michele.

In a statement, Fox and the producers of "Glee" said: "We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person."
