YES! My prediction is that if nothing is done to prevent the obesity epidemic, it will destroy our society and our economy. I don?t mean to be all negative here, but it?s a serious issue and one that we as humans need to take a serious look at. Share this post with family and friends and ask them to spread the word as well.
What is the Obesity Epidemic?
I am sure you have heard about the obesity epidemic, since it seems to be all over the news along with all the violence and other negative stories. Simply put, people in our society are getting fatter by the day and their body fat percentage is going through the roof. According to a recent report by Trust for America?s Health, if the obesity rate continues on its track more than HALF of Americans will be obese by 2030. Today, about 25% Americans are obese. World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that worldwide obesity has doubled since 1980 and in 2008 about 1.4 billion were overweight. I am sure that number is much higher today.
The chart below paints a really sad picture of where we are headed.
?
How Obesity Epidemic effect our society?
Well, let?s start with obvious. Heart disease, stroke, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and even some cancers are just some of the health consequences of obesity. The diseases themselves don?t mean much. However, when you dig deep and unravel the real impact of the obesity epidemic, your eyes will pop right out. Obesity is destroying families, hurting our development, and creating a society of unhappy and depressed individuals which leads to drug abuse and violence. I can go on and on but the bottom line is that obesity is slowly destroying our world.
How Obesity Epidemic effect our economy?
Healthcare cost and availability seems to be the hot topic for most governments, especially in the US. Obesity related healthcare cost in the US alone, range from $147 billion to nearly $210 billion. To make matters worse, at current pace the cost could increase by up to about $66 billion per year in the US. According to a speech by Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization, no country in the world will be able to sustain escalating healthcare costs brought upon by the obesity epidemic if the current trend continues. To top it all off, billions if not trillions will be lost due to reduction in economic productivity. We simply can?t afford this, especially when some of the major economies in the world are in turmoil to begin with.
Watch this video by Tony Robbins to comprehend just how staggering these numbers are. The video is about the US debt problem but I think he does a good job of explaining how much billion and trillion really is.
How does the Obesity Epidemic affect you?
If you are obese then the answer is quite straight forward. You run the risk of not ?providing and?being there for your family, living an unhappy and depressed life, self-image issues, etc.
Not obese? Just look at the mind-blowing numbers above. Yes, the obesity epidemic has a huge impact on you as well. Crippling economy could mean that you are out of a job or have to close down your business. Rising healthcare cost caused by obesity could prevent you from getting healthcare insurance. You are being affected by the obesity epidemic whether directly or indirectly and if nothing is done the affect will be disastrous.
What can you do to conquer the Obesity Epidemic?
- Make health your number 1 priority without compromise.
- Educate yourself on the food you eat and do some sort of physical activity.
- Promote healthy living in your community by organizing events that involve physical activity.
- Build your ?Core?
- Share this post with family and friends and ask them to spread the word as well.
I really believe that we can conquer the obesity epidemic but it will require us to work together and care about each other. I will continue my quest and ask that you join me.
