Tips To Help You Through Personal Bankruptcy | Siben & Siben ...

TIP! Review bankruptcy rules before you file your petition. Without knowing the exact rules, you could inadvertently run into serious issues that could ultimately lead to your bankruptcy failing.

Although circumstances leading to bankruptcy may not be positive, life following bankruptcy can be. The bankruptcy laws allow you to have a second chance at building your credit and meeting all your financial responsibilities. Read this article to learn how bankruptcy is a constructive, not destructive, process in reshaping your financial situation.

TIP! Try to secure a second job. As long as you have money coming in and use it to pay down your debts, you will likely be able to work with your creditors and make your own repayment arrangements.

If concerned about keeping possessions like a car, find out if your attorney can reduce the payment. A lot of the time you can lower payments by filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. You must have bought the car 910 or more days before you filed, the loan must have a high interest rate, and you have to have a secure and steady working history in order for that to work.

TIP! Be extremely cautious before taking on any new debt. There are lenders out there who will try to tempt you with high interest loans and credit cards which are directed towards people who have gone through the bankruptcy process.

It is important not to delay the process of determining whether or not you should file for bankruptcy. Your debt will only continue to mount as you waiver on the decision, difficult as it might be. Speaking with a professional quickly will provide you with the advice you need before things spiral out of control.

TIP! Do some research about bankruptcy laws before filing for bankruptcy. As an example, it is prohibited for someone to transfer assets from the filer?s name for one year prior to filing.

After you have filed for bankruptcy, enjoy your life. It can be several months between the initial filing and the final discharge of debts. This stress could actually cause depression, if you don?t combat it. You must realize that things will get better over time.

TIP! Keep up with your attorney and what he is doing with your bankruptcy. It is important to know the status of your case and you should not be hesitant to ask questions.

Keep the concept of shame out of your head if you are contemplating bankruptcy. It is not uncommon for bankruptcies to elicit feelings of guilt, remorse and embarrassment. Continuing to let yourself feel that way can damage your emotional health and does not benefit you in your endeavors to deal with your financial situation. If you want to cope with your bankruptcy filing successfully, you must maintain a positive point of view.

TIP! As filing bankruptcy becomes more of a reality, don?t use your entire savings or your retirement funds to pay creditors or attempt to resolve insolvency. Unless there are no other options, your retirement funds should never be touched.

Before declaring bankruptcy, see if there?s anything less drastic you can do to repair your credit. Ask a bankruptcy lawyer if a debt repayment plan or rate reduction would be of benefit. If foreclosure is imminent, see if your loan can be altered at all through a modification plan. Sometimes your lender will work with you to help pay off your debt by giving you a lower interest rate, forgiving late fees, or extending the time period of your loan. Many times creditors are happy to work with you to ensure that you will repay your loan.

TIP! Even if you become employed soon after filing for bankruptcy, you should continue with your plan. It is possible that bankruptcy is still your best course of action.

Be sure to take care in choosing a lawyer to handle your personal bankruptcy case. This type of legislation is popular for the inexperienced. Often times, people choose lawyers that aren?t licensed properly or that don?t have enough experience. Don?t fall victim to this. You can learn of a lawyer?s history and reviews from past clients via the Internet.

TIP! If most of your debt is from taxes, you are probably better off not filing for bankruptcy. Therefore, you should not use any credit card if you are going to file bankruptcy.

Ensure that you bankruptcy is your best choice. Many times a consolidation loan will ease your financial struggles. A bankruptcy filing takes a great deal of time, and it can be extremely stressful. The future of your credit will be greatly affected. This is why it is crucial that you explore your other debt relief options first.

TIP! Be careful how you pay off any debts prior to filing for personal bankruptcy. Bankruptcy rules generally outlaw repayment of creditors in the 90 days leading up to a bankruptcy filing, a period that is extended to one year when it comes to payments made to family members.

Instead of getting your lawyer from the yellow pages or on the Internet, try your hardest to find one with a personal recommendation. There are various companies that prey on the financially desperate, so you need to find someone you can trust to ensure the process goes smoothly,

TIP! Filing bankruptcy under Chapter 7 does not mean all your debts are going to disappear. You might need to reaffirm some secured debts in order to avoid having the collateral repossessed, and some debts can?t be discharged in bankruptcy at all.

As previously stated, the reasons for filing for bankruptcy are not generally a happy fairy tale. It doesn?t have to be that way after bankruptcy. Try using the tips in this article so you can make bankruptcy into the most positive experience possible.

Exhaustive family tree for birds shows recent, rapid diversification

New Haven, Conn. A Yale-led scientific team has produced the most comprehensive family tree for birds to date, connecting all living bird species nearly 10,000 in total and revealing surprising new details about their evolutionary history and its geographic context.

Analysis of the family tree shows when and where birds diversified and that birds' diversification rate has increased over the last 50 million years, challenging the conventional wisdom of biodiversity experts.

"It's the first time that we have for such a large group of species and with such a high degree of confidence the full global picture of diversification in time and space," said biologist Walter Jetz of Yale, lead author of the team's research paper, published Oct. 31 online in the journal Nature.

He continued: "The research highlights how heterogeneously fast diversifying species groups are distributed throughout the family tree and over geographic space. Many parts of the globe have seen a variety of species groups diversify rapidly and recently. All this leads to a diversification rate in birds that has been increasing over the past 50 million years."

The researchers relied heavily on fossil and DNA data, combining them with geographical information to produce the exhaustive family tree, which includes 9,993 species known to be alive now.

"The current zeitgeist in biodiversity science is that the world can fill up quickly," says biologist and co-author Arne Mooers of Simon Fraser University in Canada. "A new distinctive group, like bumblebees or tunafish, first evolves, and, if conditions are right, it quickly radiates to produce a large number of species. These species fill up all the available niches, and then there is nowhere to go. Extinction catches up, and things begin to slow down or stall. For birds the pattern is the opposite: Speciation is actually speeding up, not slowing down."

The researchers attribute the growing rate of avian diversity to an abundance of group-specific adaptations. They hypothesize that the evolution of physical or behavioral innovations in certain groups, combined with the opening of new habitats, has enabled repeated bursts of diversification. Another likely factor has been birds' exceptional mobility, researchers said, which time and again has allowed them to colonize new regions and exploit novel ecological opportunities.

In their analysis, the researchers also expose significant geographic differences in diversification rates. They are higher in the Western Hemisphere than in the Eastern, and higher on islands than mainlands. But surprisingly, they said, there is little difference in rates between the tropics and high latitudes. Regions of especially intense recent diversification include northern North American and Eurasia and southern South America.

"This was one of the big surprises," Jetz said. "For a long time biologists have thought that the vast diversity of tropical species must at least partly be due to greater rates of net species production there. For birds we find no support for this, and groups with fast and slow diversification appear to occur there as much as in the high latitudes. Instead, the answer may lie in the tropics' older age, leading to a greater accumulation of species over time. Global phylogenies like ours will allow further tests of this and other basic hypotheses about life on Earth."

Classroom Gaming Statistics - Educational Video Games Can Help ...

It seems that with the rise of technology, games like tag and hide-and-seek are becoming obsolete and an important question remains as to whether educational video games actually work.

In the 'Do Educational Video Games Actually Work' infographic, statistics reveal that a surprising amount of teachers use some form of digital game in their classrooms. The graph points out that while some agree that games could introduce as well as enhance certain skills in children like hand-eye coordination or visual-spatial skills, some still believe that video games can contribute to behavioral issues. Whether it is on the Xbox, computer or iPhone, it is almost impossible to steer kids away from video games with the abundance of technology and access available today.

Hediard | Riyadh Eats Restaurant Review Guide

Tahlia St, Riyadh?? Info & mapWrite a Review
Tel: 01 2173933???

I have always assumed that Hediard in Tahlia Street is just a coffee shop. Yes, I kind of ignored the huge ?Restaurant? sign on its building all this time because I was more focused on its huge conical shape. Naturally, I found out that I was wrong when we went there full from a dinner some where else and just looking forward to downing some coffee and dessert before going home. Sweets over savory this time.

What I can tell you though about Hediard is that it?s the perfect place for a dinner date with your husband or wife (whoever is in-charge of dinner. The waiters and managers were courteous and polite but the elevator that welcomes you is a little bit too small for those with claustrophobia. Their dimly-lit family section that overlooks Tahlia Street is a nice place to have long conversations; the dark walls offering a convenient shade from the busy outside world. The table setting is chic and elegant.

Since we were just there to satiate our sweet cravings, our waiter?s suggestion of salads was set aside for next time. We went to the rack displaying their available cakes and my friend went for the carrot cake. I ordered a souffle, the recommendation of our helpful waiter. And two ice blended drinks of Mocha and Tiramisu. We were the only customers during our visit so our orders came out quickly.

It was some kind of a sugar high when I dug in to my souffle. It was soft, warm and oh so chocolatey! I?m not sure if it wasn?t fully baked because I couldn?t quite see it with the lights dimmed so low, but it certainly tasted doughy. I?m not complaining though because I like the taste of dough (like chocolate chip cookie dough). The ice cream on the side lent a contrast of temperature.

As for drinks, my mocha frap was sweet and refreshing. My friend?s carrot cake was okay; but nothing out of the ordinary. For 25 riyals, it was a little on the expensive side, and I know the brand of cakes they were offering so I think it was overpriced. Nevertheless, Hediard satisfied our sweet tooth. We hope to return for the main meals and salads, along with the superb ambiance and view. There are definitely a lot of reasons to return!

Paranormal Tours In Alton Illinois Part 2

Paranormal Tours In Alton Illinois Part 2

Mineral Springs Mall is one of the oldest and most historic buildings in Alton, Illinois. It was started as Mineral Springs Hotel by two German immigrants August and Herman Luer in 1909. Mineral Springs Hotel was completed on August 1, 1914. It was built with luxurious terrazzo floors, decorated cornices, marble staircases and artistic glass throughout the hotel. It was an immediate success and was even more popular after the mineral pool was opened in the basement.

The hotel was a popular meeting place for politicians, traveling salesmen, civic leaders and socialites. The pool attracted water polo clubs, people for swimming lessons and the claimed healing powers of the mineral water. The water was claimed to have healing powers for the sick and the noted Dr. Furlong of this period in time gave mineral baths and claimed they would heal colds, headaches and sore muscles. It has been reported that Mineral Springs Hotel attracted up to 30,000 visitors in one season.

With this many visitors in the early 1900?s it is surprising that there are not more paranormal activities in the Mineral Springs Mall. There are six known ghosts I have talked about in previous discussion; Pearl, Maria, Gus, Cassandra, William and one that does not have a name. The nameless ghost is known to be wearing a three piece suit or a tuxedo. He has been observed in the mineral pool where Cassandra has been known to be.

There was an art store using the adjoining room to the pool in the basement and one evening a worker heard noise in the pool area, when she went to investigate there was a figure of a man in a suit in the mineral pool. After this siting the store was moved immediately.

There have been others known to have been attracted to the mall, as the energy from visitors on the tours has caused wayfarers to come into the hotel. Most are just passing through and are just drawn by the extra activity and energy in the mall and do not stay. There have also been many orbs spotted on tours and Wayne, the main tour guide, usually has them swarm him when he enters the mineral pool, although I did not observe this on our tour. Some of the resident ghosts have also been known to follow tour visitors when they leave the mall. The guides had noted they then get a call and have to explain to the visitor how to make them return to the mall.

The Mineral Springs Mall is a very interesting place. I did not feel uncomfortable in this building and actually felt more at ease. Maybe because I knew I was in the presence of lost souls looking for help.

Who knows how many more spiritual residents the Mineral Springs Hotel will attract in the next hundred years?

Police seeking help in traffic death of R&B artist

ATLANTA (AP) ? Authorities are trying the figure out why R&B artist Natina Reed was in a street when she was struck by a car and killed, two days shy of her 33rd birthday.

Gwinnett County police say they'd to talk to anyone with information that could help them determine what happened to Reed late Friday near Lilburn in metro Atlanta.

The 32-year-old Reed was the rapping member of the 1990s female singing group Blaque, which had hits "808" and "Bring It All to Me." She was also an actress, appearing in the 2000 hit movie "Bring it On," which also featured Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union.

Police say Reed was struck and killed while in the roadway at an intersection on U.S. 29. Police say the driver wasn't at fault and no charges are being filed. They say the only witnesses were the driver and a passenger.

Investigators want to determine why Reed was in the road.

She is survived by a son, Tren, from a relationship with fellow rapper Kurupt. In a statement on Twitter, Kurupt said: "This is a tremendous loss to our family."

NASA's Huge New SLS Rocket Could Power Missions Far Beyond Mars

NASA is contemplating space journeys far beyond a near-Earth asteroid, the moon or Mars for its new heavy-lift rocket in development. The Space Launch System (SLS), as it is called, could instead visit the moon of Pluto or return samples from other outer planets.

An unmanned flyby mission to Pluto's Charon, sample return missions to Jupiter's moon Europa or Saturn's Titan, or a sample-gathering flight through Jupiter's atmosphere or the ice water jets of Saturn's Enceladus ? all are said to be possible with the 286,000-pound (130,000 kilograms) launch capabilities of the Space Launch System.

The first launch of SLS is planned for 2017, but it will not have an upper stage and will be able to put only 154,000 pounds (70,000 kg) into low-Earth orbit. Beginning in 2022, however, the rocket is expected to have more powerful boosters and an upper stage to give it an ability to deliver 286,000 pounds to Earth orbit.

Such large cargos will be transported under a nose-cone fairing that will have a diameter of about 30 feet (10 meters), giving the Space Launch System a useful payload volume of about 38,846 cubic feet (1,100 cubic meters). The rocket itself has a diameter of about 25 feet (8.4 meters). [Photos: NASA's Space Launch System for Deep Space Flights]

Science possibilities

It is this combination of a very large lift capability and nose-cone volume that is expected to enable ambitious missions such as sample return from the outer planets.

"Most of the science community hasn't thought beyond current lift capability. Scientists haven't thought about what mass and volume they need to use," Kenneth Bruce Morris, a Booz Allen Hamilton senior associate, said at the 63rd annual International Astronautical Congress in Naples, Italy, on Oct 5. Morris' presentation was co-authored with the Marshall Space Flight Center. Before joining Booz Allen Hamilton, Morris was NASA's lead for Ares V utilization planning under the now-canceled Constellation program.

Because of the SLS payload capability, future science spacecraft will be able to carry large propulsion systems and more fuel, enabling them to reduce their mission time and carry more instruments. To reach the outer planets, previous spacecraft have had to make multiple gravity-assist maneuvers around the inner planets to reach the velocity needed, costing valuable time. The SLS could increase mission time by years, since its larger propulsion systems would enable more direct trajectories.?

Another advantage of SLS is the potential to reduce the number of separate launches complex missions will require. For example, with existing boosters, an outer planet sample mission would require many launches to assemble the spacecraft. With SLS, however, the mission could be achieved with fewer launches, or even just one, reducing complexity.

In addition to sample return, such large scientific spacecraft could deliver multiple rovers to the surface of Venus or carry the substantial shielding needed for operating long term in the harsh radiation environment of the Jupiter system.

"We've been talking with the science community. Most of our focus has been on targeted one-on-one interactions between SLS and high-priority science missions in the coming decades, discussing mutually beneficial options," Stephen Creech, SLS strategic development manager for NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, told SPACE.com.

Design milestones

On July 25, the SLS program passed two key reviews, for combined system definition and system requirements, to move toward its preliminary design review, scheduled for late 2013. The SLS critical design review is scheduled for early 2014. These various checkpoints pave the way for the finished design of SLS to begin construction in earnest.

As well as missions to the outer planets, the SLS could launch space telescopes that operate at the thermally stable second sun-Earth Lagrange point, a spot in space where gravity from the sun and Earth balance each other out. Designed to observe ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared light, these space telescopes would use huge mirrors with diameters from about 24 feet to 52 feet (16 meters). A 52-foot mirror telescope could find and characterize alien planets around other stars.

Such large imaging systems would also be useful for the U.S. government's National Reconnaissance Office satellites and other Department of Defense spacecraft. Launching large robotic spacecraft capable of traveling to geostationary orbit to service telecommunication satellites is another possible use for SLS. [Video: SLS ? Leaving Low-Earth Orbit Behind]

Because the Space Launch System would be able to deliver very large structures with a few launches, it could also put into orbit, for assembly, the component parts of a space-based solar power system. Such a solar satellite could be a commercial venture.

Private space stations

Another commercial venture the SLS could help launch is a Bigelow Aerospace space station. NASA's Creech has confirmed to SPACE.com that the space agency has spoken to Bigelow.

The company has proposed a private space station, leased by governments and corporations for research, which would consist of four of Bigelow's inflatable BA330 modules, a docking node and a propulsion unit. Each BA330 has a total volume of 11,653 cubic feet (330 cubic meters). The first BA330 is to be launched on a Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) Falcon 9 rocket in 2015.

The SLS could also enable Lagrange point gateway architecture for manned exploration, said Jim Chilton, Boeing's space exploration vice president and Space Launch System stages program manager. Speaking at the astronautical congress, Chilton's presentation showed how two SLS launches, using 15-foot-long nose cones capable of fitting 154,000 pounds inside, would be able to deliver the modules for a Lagrange point platform. Located at the Earth-moon L2 Lagrange point, beyond our natural satellite's orbit, the platform would be a waypoint for refueling.

Under NASA's exploration plans, the manned Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, launching atop an SLS rocket, would go to an asteroid after a trip around the moon and back in 2021. The asteroid mission would be a deep-space trip for the astronauts; an intermediate test mission could see the crew go to such a platform at the L2 Lagrange point.

Lockheed, the primary Orion contractor, is also considering alternate missions for the space capsule. Josh Hopkins, Lockheed Martin Space Systems' space exploration architect, described to SPACE.com an in-orbit experiment to create a centrifugal force onboard Orion that would give astronauts a gravity-like experience.

"We've been looking at an artificial gravity test where you put an Orion in a tether with a mass and spin them up and Orion is not designed to be spun up and so we're working on that, we're interested in it," he told SPACE.com.

Global Biodiversity Information Facility

Entry of mega-diverse country into network 'very exciting', says GBIF chair

Copenhagen / Braslia Brazil has become the latest country to join the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), dedicated to promoting free and open access to biodiversity data.

The formal step of becoming a GBIF Participant was the signature of the GBIF Memorandum of Understanding by the Brazilian Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Marco Antonio Raupp.

The MoU commits a country to setting up a national node to coordinate publication of biodiversity data, and brings it into a collaborative global community sharing tools, skills and experience related to management of biological information resources.

The Chair of GBIF's Governing Board, Joanne Daly, said: "This is very exciting, and all Participants in GBIF will share the excitement. Many countries see Brazil's participation in GBIF as vital to global efforts in biodiversity conservation and management.

"Not only is Brazil one of the most biodiverse countries, its scientists are some of the most active in biodiversity science and make an impressive global contribution."

Carlos Nobre, national secretary for policies and programmes at the Brazilian ministry of science, technology and innovation (MCTI), commented: "In the year of Rio +20, Brazil more than ever is making a firm commitment to direct our policies towards sustainable development.

"This leads inevitably towards scientific knowledge about our natural resources, most especially regarding biodiversity. Knowledge to protect, knowledge to use sustainably. The official association of the country with GBIF is a sign of the importance of knowledge for the management of our immense natural resources."

Mercedes Bustamante, director of thematic policies and programmes at the MCTI, added:

"For Brazil, this significant step represents an opportunity for cooperation in development of the generation and management of knowledge about our biodiversity and natural resources.

"In this way, the country can enhance the capacity for mobilization, interconnection and sharing of the diverse types of data from different sources included in GBIF, and so contribute from a scientific standpoint to the conservation of biodiversity."

Brazil is estimated to contain some 15 per cent of the entire biodiversity of the planet, in seven biomes (the Amazon, Caatinga semi-arid zone, Cerrado woodland-savanna, Pampa grasslands, the Atlantic Forest and the coastal and marine zone).

Even before Brazil's participation in GBIF, more than 1.6 million records relating to Brazilian biodiversity have been accessible through the GBIF Data Portal, published from over 700 datasets held in 28 countries (see http://data.gbif.org/countries/BR/).

With the move to participation, many times this number of digital records documenting the country's exceptional variety of plants, animals and other organisms can be published through GBIF from Brazilian research institutions, museums, herbaria and observational networks.

The aim of the country is to share experiences through GBIF and establish an interface with the Information System for Brazilian Biodiversity and Ecosystems (SIB-Br), a project of the MCTI, in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), involving an investment of US$28 million.

Brazilian scientists have already been significant users of data published through GBIF: in the past three years, at least 18 peer-reviewed research papers with authors from Brazil have cited use of GBIF-mediated data. Globally, on average around four peer-reviewed papers are published each week using data accessed via the GBIF network.

  • Initially, Brazil joins GBIF as an Associate Participant, which means that although it can participate fully in data publishing and capacity building projects, it does not make a financial contribution to the global GBIF budget and does not hold a vote in the Governing Board. On signing the MoU as an Associate Participant, a country commits to moving towards voting participation within five years.
  • Brazil joins Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru and Uruguay as GBIF Participants in Latin America.

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) was established by governments in 2001 to encourage free and open access to biodiversity data, via the Internet. Through a global network of 58 countries and 46 organizations, GBIF promotes and facilitates the mobilization, access, discovery and use of information about the occurrence of organisms over time and across the planet. Currently, more than 388 million data records, from over 10,000 datasets published by 422 institutions, are published through the GBIF network.

Fear No Hurricane: Obama Quietly Approved Federal Subsidies to ...

Four months before Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast, President Obama quietly signed legislation expanding the federal program that offers taxpayer-subsidized flood insurance to ocean-front homeowners.

The law extended the National Flood Insurance Program for five years while also opening the program for the first time to multi-family properties like beachfront condominiums. The flood insurance provisions were part of a bill known as the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st?Century Act that passed the House?373 to 52?on June 29 and the Senate by?74 to 19?the same day. President Obama signed it into law on July 6 with?remarks?that dwelled on the transportation spending and student loan-related language in the Act, but made no mention at all of the flood insurance.

The Left tends to look at hurricanes as examples of how government works well?the National Weather Service warns people, police and firefighters help with evacuations and rescue, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency helps clean up. Free-market types, by contrast, argue that hurricane casualties are partly the result of unintended consequences of government actions: without federal flood insurance, many fewer people would take the risk of living in low-lying areas vulnerable to storm surges.

Television reporter John Stossel, who once had an oceanfront house washed away by a storm, has called the flood insurance program an ?outrage? and ?dumb.?

?The subsidized insurance goes to affluent homeowners on both coasts ? from Malibu Beach, where movie stars live, to Kennebunkport where the Bush family has a vacation home, to Hyannisport, where the Kennedy family has a summer home, to the Hamptons, where I bought my house,? he?wrote.

In part to respond to criticism such as Mr. Stossel?s, this summer?s five-year extension and expansion of the flood-insurance program was described?by its backers as ?reform.? The legislation is sometimes known as the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, after its champions, two congresswomen?Judy Biggert, a Republican of Illinois, and Maxine Waters, a Democrat of California.

The federal flood insurance program shares several characteristics with the Medicare and ObamaCare programs that provide health insurance. Like Medicare, the federal flood insurance law was originally enacted under President Lyndon Johnson. And as is eventually predicted for Medicare, ?current premiums are not enough to cover expected costs,? and the flood insurance program wound up?costing?$18 billion.

As ObamaCare does, the flood insurance program operates through private insurance companies whose annual premium increases are limited by the government. And, as with ObamaCare, the flood insurance program features ?community rating,? which means the riskiest cases are not charged the highest rates.

This summer?s extension of the flood insurance law was a textbook example of how the system in Washington works, or doesn?t work. Though billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives were at stake, the extension got virtually no mainstream press attention. It was covered extensively, however, in Insurance Journal, a trade publication that caters to the industry with?headlines?such as ?Agents, Insurers Cheer Congress OK of Flood Insurance Reform Bill.?

The 584-page congressional conference report that included the flood insurance provisions was filed on Thursday June 28; the House and Senate both voted on it on Friday, June 29, an apparent violation of Speaker Boehner?s?pledge?that the text of bills would be posted online at least three days before a vote. A surprising number of congressmen and senators with reputations as conservatives voted for the law, including Paul Ryan and Jeb Hensarling, Jon Kyl and Mitch McConnell. Among the minority who opposed the bill were Marco Rubio, Pat Toomey, Jim DeMint, Ron and Rand Paul, Rob Portman, and John Cornyn.

The next week was interrupted by the Fourth of July holiday. When Mr. Obama signed the bill into law on July 6, he was almost apologetic, saying, ?We wouldn?t normally keep you this late on a Friday afternoon.?

Mark your calendar for 2017, when the federal flood insurance program will come up again for renewal. Does it really have to take a 100-year storm to cause Congress to come around to the idea that subsidizing home-ownership in flood plains may not be something for which it is worth borrowing money from China?

96% Argo

'Argo'. Ben Affleck, take a bow. A magnificent achievement in pacing and tension, bringing an unbelievable true story to life. There's a line towards the beginning, when they're trying to sell The Hollywood Option, that goes something like, "And everybody knows they'd shoot in Stalingrad with Pol Pot directing if it would sell tickets." This cynical undercurrent that still permeates through Hollywood today, arguably more so, grounds this film in a believability that would be hard to artificially create solely for this film. It's one of the many cheeky shots the film takes, having a go at acting, directing and everything in between. Affleck's camera movements are frenetic and clear all at once, swooping, circling and darting rapidly on occasion, most noticeable in the opening hysteria at the embassy. The last twenty or so minutes, where 'Argo' ratchets up the tension, is owed in large to some brilliant editing, switching between the four parties involved, while never needing to cheat the audience in taking them down a false path. There was an audible sign of relief in the theatre when that plane finally takes off! Then there's Ben Affleck the actor. First things first. I have a large man-crush on his beard. Affleck doesn't overplay his character, but he nails the emotional moments, and I was totally on board his crazy plan, with his heart very much in the right place. The supporting cast is insane, but Bryan Cranston and Alan Arkin shine the brightest, getting the killer lines written by Chris Terrio.I loved 'Gone Baby Gone' and 'The Town'. It gives me great pleasure to see Affleck stretching out from his familiar Boston, making something completely different, and getting it so right.

Canada News Centre - Canada Condemns Attack at Church in ...

October 28, 2012 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird issued the following statement:

?Canada unequivocally condemns today?s cowardly attack at a Catholic church holding Mass in northern Nigeria.

?On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those killed and wish a speedy recovery to those injured by this senseless violence.

?These people were targeted because of their religious beliefs. No one should ever have to practise his or her faith in fear. Canada calls on all Nigerians to respect religious freedom and refrain from acts of violence. Canada further calls on the Nigerian government to bring to justice those responsible for this heinous crime.?

In his first official visit to Nigeria earlier this month, Baird met with Foreign Minister Olugbenga Ashiru. Both agreed that prosperity and security are inextricably linked, and both are committed to religious pluralism.

The Government of Canada has made religious freedom a foreign policy priority. Canada is committed to working with Nigerian institutions and civil society representatives to promote freedom of religion and human rights for all. Canada is currently working with the Nigerian government on a security and non-proliferation project in the middle-belt city of Jos. The project aims to reduce the security risks posed by terrorist groups known to be active in the region and who often target religious groups and institutions.
