Job seekers flock to Moraine | The Glacier

Photo of Job and Internship Fair

The Job Research Center hosted a job internship fair on 27 September for students, alumni, and current employees of Moraine Valley. The event introduced job seekers to 60 employers in the area, including Allstate, Target, and Palos Community Hospital.

The job internship fair was held in the Business and Conference Center of building M from 2-5 p.m. Professional attire and a resume were required. Job seekers without proper attire had the opportunity to borrow suites and business clothing donated from staff. Laura Kockler, a job resource specialist of the JRC, said the event gave job seekers an opportunity to personally introduce themselves to employers and network in a professional job atmosphere. ?We?re the bridge between students and employers? said Kockler.

The job internship fair opened with a luncheon for all prospective employers, and a steady stream of applicants came through to present their resumes and receive information on the employment opportunities.

Over the years the internship fair has seen a fluctuation of employers represented, but the maximum 60 tables occupied this semester may be a promising sign of growing job opportunities. New employers join the fair every semester.

Tamima Farooqui has worked the internship fair as a job research specialist for the last ten years. ?Certain industries are making a comeback?, says Farooqui, ?Banking, insurance, healthcare, and manufacturing especially,? added Farooqui. A guide to employer?s pamphlet was given out listing the employers and describing the opportunities available.

Andrea Johnson, a student and job seeker with experience in customer service, said the number of prospective employers was impressive. ?Everyone was very professional and helpful on what positions were available,? said Johnson.

The internship fair required nametags as identification, professional business attire, and a submitting of resumes before applicants were allowed inside to speak with and review prospective employers in the Palos, Orland Park, and Worth areas.

Moraine Valley Community College had its own table, as well as Olivet Nazarene University, Benedictine University, and other schools in the area. The Job Resource Center holds job internship fairs once a semester, and is open to students and alumni for resume building, internships, and various career workshops including Job Search Techniques and Phone Interviewing Etiquette.

The job resource center is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Tuesday 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Appointments for services or resume critiquing can be made at (708) 974-5737, or online at morainevalley.edu/jrc. Walk-ins are welcome for fifteen-minute consolations from a job resource specialist Tuesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9- to 10 a.m.

Despite his many innovations in the field of psychology, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) rarely spelled out the social consequences of his theories. His baseline approach was to listen to patients and analyse their mental shadows. Interpreting dreams constitutes an interesting intellectual exercise, but in terms of effectiveness, it cannot compare to vigorous rational discourse.

Civilization and its Discontents ?

By the time Freud dared to present his social views in writing, he was already 74 years old. His essay Civilization and its Discontents (1930) was radically different from his previous publications. In this ground-breaking book, Freud outlines his views on human psychology from the point of view, not only of individual history, but also of interpersonal behaviour.

Although the overall tone of the essay is cautious and conservative, readers noticed Freud's underlying criticism. Reviewers of the book had no problem with Freud's listening to patients and interpreting their dreams, but his latest opinions were out of the question. The essay generated such opposition that Freud never addressed similar subjects again.

Many decades have passed, but tradition has not lost any of its force. Its tentacles feed on the weak in order to starve the independent; it silences doubts and paralyses initiative; it renders questions inaudible and self-reliance unthinkable.?
Being like everybody else?

On the other hand, preaching change for the sake of swimming upstream makes little sense. Being like everybody else has substantial private and professional advantages. It would be foolishly for anyone to discard a secure position simply because it offers few challenges. Before making a bold move, you should have something better in view.

Boredom is one of the most destructive effects of passivity. Lack of variety is annoying; extreme repetitiveness drives people to despair. Passivity generates drudgery because it sucks ambition out of the environment. Little by little, routine turns to hopelessness. Life enjoyment wanes as individuals are emptied of their last drops of entrepreneurship.

Few people are completely innovative or passive. The majority of us oscillate between the two poles, gaining ground one day and retreating on the next. Although we are clever enough to see the long-term disadvantages of passivity, we move away from it only slowly, in careful steps.

Human beings require time to change essential thinking patterns. Even if a man exerts massive efforts, he will not transform his personality in a week. Emotional changes are the outcome of philosophical transformation.

A quick fix will not overhaul your personality, but for all practical purposes, you don't need it either. To improve your effectiveness, you just have to correct your thinking when passivity makes its appearance.?
The transition from routine to entrepreneurship?

We can start the transition from routine to entrepreneurship with a mental exercise that takes only ten minutes, but if you perform it daily for several months, your attitude will change permanently. Here is how the process works:

Devote the initial two minutes to verbalizing the habit that you wish to be discard. Ask yourself why you have been acting and thinking in that particular way. What were you trying to achieve with such behaviour? Was it something that you learned in infancy or that you have picked up along the way?

If you perform the exercise while you are driving alone, take the opportunity to speak out your thoughts. In these days of ubiquitous mobile phones, nobody will be surprised to see a driver speaking aloud in his car. Who knows if he is dictating notes into a recorder or giving instructions by phone to his stock broker?

Take a deep breath a spend the next three minutes exploring your feelings. How strong is your motivation to change? What penalties would you incur if you drop tasks you dislike? Can you afford to quit what you detest? Are you afraid of changing? How justified are your concerns?

During the remaining five minutes of the process, paint a mental picture of the desired transformation. Name the benefits of the alternatives that you want to pursue. Think of the doors that your new behaviour will open. Speak out the advantages and let them turn around your emotions.

If your disputation is sufficiently strong, a feeling of elation should ensue. Make your defence of change passionate. Your speech should win over your heart, not justify the past. Let optimism burn down the remnants of boredom; let ambition bury passivity under the debris of broken routines.?
Ten minutes of thoughtfulness?

Ten minutes of thoughtfulness can turn around your mood. A vigorous disputation can shift your views from passivity to entrepreneurship. Make this exercise a fun performance. Win yourself over with sound arguments and enthusiastic words.

If you do this once a day during several months, your thought patterns will change. Your alertness to opportunities will increase. Your willingness to seek alternatives will grow until you won't need those ten minutes any more. At that point, your ship will have successfully sailed away from the shore.

Former Zeeland attorney to plead in $900,000 ... - Estate of Denial

GRAND RAPIDS, MI ? Former Zeeland attorney Kenneth Hoesch has agreed to plead guilty in a scheme to steal nearly $900,000 in clients? estate planning trusts.

Hoesch, recently found competent to stand trial, has agreed to plead guilty to charges of mail fraud, a 20-year felony, and making a false statement on a tax return, a three-year felony.

The government today filed felony information outlining the plea agreement.

Hoesch, while a licensed attorney, set up estate planning trusts for clients.

?In truth and fact, defendant Hoesch engaged in a fraudulent scheme to deprive his law clients and their intended beneficiaries of money, funds and similar property rights by the commission of a mail fraud scheme ?,? Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael MacDonald wrote in court documents.

He said Hoesch took clients? assets, and did not place them in trust accounts, or placed them in trust accounts only to withdraw funds for his own use. He also moved clients? funds to conceal the theft, and issued false reports, statements and correspondence.

Hoesch also concealed the fraud from his former law partners.

Both sides in the case agreed that restitution should be $889,398.

The agreement also requires Hoesch to pay restitution of $835,000 to Grand River Bank. He had provided false and misleading information that resulted in the bank issuing two loans to him, documents showed.

Those loans were secured by real estate.

The government also said Hoesch took $700,000 from a client from 1997 to 2002, which is outside of the statute of limitations.

Both that case and the alleged bank fraud will be used in calculating losses for federal advisory sentencing guidelines.

He is scheduled to plead on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids.

Deadly connection: New report on extreme weather and climate - Grist

Climate change is having a steroidal effect on extreme weather. A summer featuring the hottest July on record in the continental United States punctuated a series of costly and deadly weather events.

This week, we released a new report, ?Going to Extremes: Climate Change and the Increasing Risk of Weather Disasters? [PDF]. The report looks at the impacts of 2012?s record-breaking heat on agriculture, wildfires, storms, and water levels. The report found the links between extreme weather and climate to be abundant, robust, and well-documented in peer-reviewed scientific studies.

Here are a few highlights from our report:

  • Wildfires: This year, wildfires burned more than 8.6 million acres, an area the size of New Jersey and Connecticut combined.
  • Drought: This summer, more than half of the counties in the United States have been designated disaster zones. The 2012 drought is on par with the worst months from the multi-year droughts of the Dust Bowl era.
  • Record temperature: August 2012 was the 330th consecutive month with global temperatures above the 20th century average. There has not been a single month cooler than the 20th century global average since February 1985.
  • Sea ice melt: Arctic sea ice coverage shrank to a record low 1.32 million square miles, 18 percent below the previous record set in 2007.

For decades, we have been fighting for a cleaner, safer environment ? a future where our children and grandchildren never have to worry about the air they breathe or the water they drink.

In this Congress, we have witnessed an all-out assault on the environment and the proliferation of polluter giveaways. While Mitt Romney jokes about the dangers of global warming, his Republican allies in the House have voted more than 300 times to undermine environmental protections during the last 18 months.

Carbon pollution is mixing a deadly cocktail of heat and extreme weather that is costing lives and billions of dollars in damages. Natural disasters in 2011 resulted in the most costly toll in history ? $154 billion worth of worldwide losses from floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, and other extreme weather events. But the Republican response to this threat has been to deny the science and block action.

While a strategy of denial and delay may benefit polluters, it?s not what the American people want their Congress to be doing. A recent poll from the Civil Society Institute [PDF] indicated that 81 percent of Americans are concerned about ?increased drought? and extreme weather events. Clearly, now is the time for climate action. It?s what the planet needs and it?s what the public wants. We must create a sea change in Congress before we fall victim to sea rise.

NBA finalizing flopping procedures

ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) ? The NBA is about to act in hopes of stopping the floppers.

Spokesman Tim Frank said Thursday the league is finalizing procedures to deal with flopping, the art of falling down when little or no contact was made in an effort to trick referees into calling a foul.

Frank said the competition committee met two weeks ago and discussed plans that would go in place this season. Commissioner David Stern believes too many players are deceiving referees by flopping and has been seeking a way to properly penalize them.

The procedures will likely involve a postgame review of the play by the league office, rather than an official calling an infraction during the game, Frank said. Players would likely be fined if the league determined they flopped.

The proposed plan mirrors a "postgame analysis" option Stern discussed after the competition committee met in June. The league already retroactively reviews flagrant fouls to determine if they need to be upgraded or downgraded.

"If you continue to do this, you may you have to suffer some consequences," Stern said about flopping during the NBA Finals. "What those exactly should be and what the progression is, is to be decided, because ... we just want to put a stake in the ground that says this is not something that we want to be part of our game, without coming down with a sledgehammer but just doing it in a minimalist way to begin stamping it out. And I think there are ways we can do that and we'll have to wait and see exactly what we come up with."

The league's 62-person referee staff is holding its training camp, its first under the leadership of former NBA player and longtime league executive Mike Bantom. Bantom replaced Gen. Ron Johnson as executive vice president of referee operations earlier this month.

"I think one of the things that I'd just like to focus on is I think there's a perception out there that kind of throws into question sometimes the competence of our officials and even the integrity of them at times, and I think that that's not true to begin with and unfair, and I want to try and change that perception," said Bantom, who had been the league's senior vice president of player development since 1999.

Political Oratory: Power of words, the case of Khumbo and Mutharika ...

By Ndumanene Devlin Silungwe

September 28, 2012 ????? 0 Comments

Email This Post?Email This Post

It is said that words create, use them wisely; be in the shoes of your audience before uttering them. For politicians in government, that audience is beyond a political podium; it is a nation. Thus it helps for politicians in positions of authority to do a self-reflection on the potential consequences of what they speak both publicly and privately.

The Khumbo Kachali Karonga slurs and even the Peter Mutharika MIJ FM slurs ? made both in public and private respectively, come as classic examples. I had made a contribution previously, on the passing of Bingu wa Mutharika, that one political institution the government of President Joyce Banda needed to urgently overhaul, as a way of introducing civilized politics, was the Malawian nature of political oratory.

Khumbo Kachali: Made rude remarks in Karonga

The saddening situation is that political oratory in Malawi, both in the ruling camp and the opposition, has thrived on being combative, confrontational, defamatory, malicious, hateful and disrespectful of the emotions of those holding honest divergent views. This problem is partly caused by the ndale mindset which looks at politics as the game of entangling each other into failure.

For this reason it gives birth to ?them and us? paradigms ? where governments are constantly paranoid seeing those outside it as having a small axe to grind. Sometimes the negative energy comes from opposition that is driven by nothing more than seeing those in government fail. But this is the more reason people in government must approach and respond to criticisms with maturity.

It is encouraging, from the KK incident in Karonga, that Malawians are giving a cue to public officers about what the nation expect of behaviour of their servants. I can only pray that this will not be a selective incident, but that it will continue for the future KKs. This is significant because if leaders that spew hatred and demean Malawians are left unchecked what becomes of the the future politicians? The destructive and unchecked oratory of previous arrogant political personalities like ate Charles Kamphulusas and late George Bundawunda Phiris in Kamuzu?s government; Davis Kapitos in Muluzi?s government and Patricia Kaliatis in Bingu?s government have perpetuated hateful politics for too long and compromised quality of unity in our society and that is why it is refreshing to have this uproar. This country has had inter-generational been predisposition to hateful political oratory so much so that this has been normalized for the reason that none of our leaders were taken to task either by the electorate or their rank and file.

We need to imagine the slanderous political comments made during the ruling political parties? rallies which have been broadcast and rebroadcast, often unedited since the 1964 cabinet crisis of Hastings Kamuzu Banda. Think of abongololo, wabodza lenelene, madeya, omwa mapilisi 30, tiankhwezule ting?onoting?ono etc. Does not this translate to over 40years of extra-curricular lessons on our radio and television? For not reprimanding those that misspeak, it has reinforced not just the language, but also indoctrinated nursery politicians with insulting oratory. Such politicians compromise the dignity of parenthood and do not do children glued to radios and television justice. Children expect symbols of parenthood to do what they teach, and lead by example.

Does it need to reach censorship proportions when it comes to political and presidential rallies broadcast on radio? Say LVIP10 for ? Language, Violence, Insults and Prejudice and fit for those 10years and above? I had asked. How do parents ensure the safety of children? How do parents explain themselves to children who question them for being disciplined of behaviour that elders in political arena make a meal of? The KK incident must be a wakeup call for the mettle Malawians are made of.

harmz2361 I'm a muddled at the moment, I'm looking at a split path. I can go in left or I can go right but I'm not sure which way I should go.

This is in reference of my Education/Career choices.

I honestly have know idea what's best for me. Could you help me please?

?

alexburke You are in between paths just like you said.
I see the paths being basically EVEN but one has a higher cost.
The one with higher cost gets you there faster, but not always a wise
choice because the other doesn't take you much longer and there NO
NEED to rush anything. Eventually everything comes at the end of the path
there's say a "package" waiting. Both paths give the same package.
its how your choosing the decision of what route to take.

My advise is go with the PATH or ROUTE that is a little longer.
Who cares right.. your eventually get there. Its all about
learning to enjoy the trip on that path.

You could be taking the long way, and not like it maybe even wish
you took the faster route. Truth is its not the path
you choice ITS THE WAY YOU CHOOSE To experience it.

I will say with certainty that at the end of both paths is a comfortable
life.
Take the longer path if you can enjoy the ride and want to make a commitment
to that.
Take the shorter ride if you want to just get it over with.

Today's Headlines ? Sept. 27, 2012 - Kaiser Health News

Today?s early morning highlights from the major news organizations, including reports about how the health law and Medicare are buzz words in public opinion polls and on the campaign trail.

Los Angeles Times: Romney Cites His Healthcare Law As Proof Of His Compassion
Mitt Romney, while campaigning in Ohio on Wednesday, highlighted the healthcare law that he passed while governor of Massachusetts as proof of his empathy for people. ? The healthcare law is controversial among conservatives because it included a mandate that nearly every state resident purchase the insurance or be fined; it served as the model of the federal healthcare law that is Obama?s signature act as president, and that is an anathema to many Republicans (Mehta, 9/26).

Politico: Romney Hits ?Obamacare? In Ohio
Facing falling poll numbers in Ohio, Mitt Romney reconfigured his stump speech here, ratcheting up his attack on President Barack Obama?s health care law and returning to his once-abandoned talking points about the Founding Fathers and the debt clock. ? Instead of simply vowing to repeal the health care overhaul, Romney spoke more about the danger it poses to American freedoms (Gibson, 9/26).

For more headlines ?

The Washington Post: Romney Shows Political Flexibility On Health Care
Over the course of a half hour on Wednesday evening, Mitt Romney put on a vivid display of his political flexibility on the lightning-rod issue of health care. As his surrogates were warming up a crowd of 3,600 at the SeaGate Convention Centre in downtown Toledo, Romney sat backstage for an interview with NBC News, during which? he fully embraced the health care overhaul he signed into law as governor of Massachusetts. ? Then, just minutes later, Romney stepped out to rally his supporters here with a sharp critique of Obama?s national health-care overhaul, calling the federal law ?Exhibit No. 1? of Obama?s liberal view of government, even though it is very similar to Romney?s own Massachusetts law (Rucker, 9/26).

The New York Times: Romney Ad Reaches Out To Working Class
Mitt Romney stepped up his efforts to repair the damage from his ?47 percent? comments, releasing a new television ad on Wednesday. ? In an NBC News interview on Wednesday, Mr. Romney, explaining why he could relate to middle-class voters, talked about the health care law he championed as governor of Massachusetts but rarely mentions on the campaign trail. ?Don?t forget ? I got everybody in my state insured,? he said. ?One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don?t think there?s anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record? (Parker, 9/26).

Politico: Swing-States Polls: President Obama Tops Mitt Romney On Medicare
And that?s despite weeks of Republican attacks that the president is taking $716 billion from Medicare to pay for ?Obamacare.? In Florida, Obama is up by 15 percentage points on the question of who would do a better job on Medicare, 55 percent to 40 percent. The numbers are consistent in all three states. Obama leads 55 percent to 39 percent in Ohio, and 55 percent to 39 percent in Pennsylvania (Norman, 9/27).

The Wall Street Journal: Big Firms Overhaul Health Coverage
Two big employers are planning a radical change in the way they provide health benefits to their workers, giving employees a fixed sum of money and allowing them to choose their medical coverage and insurer from an online marketplace (Mathews, 9/26).

The Associated Press/Washington Post: How To Maximize Your Savings Through Smart Health Care Benefit Decisions
Employers will soon be offering workers their yearly opportunity to make changes to their health care benefits. All too often this open-enrollment period has required combing through pages and pages of confusing insurance terms. But this year workers will receive help translating that jargon thanks to a new requirement that insurers provide a user-friendly coverage summary of all health plans. Combined with innovative wellness plans that reward employees for staying health, experts say millions of workers should be able to make smarter benefit decision and save money in the process (9/26).

The Associated Press/Washington Post: Inspector General: Medicare Wrongly Paid For $25M In Refills On Painkillers, Other Drugs
Medicare routinely refilled pain pills and other restricted medications that are barred by federal law from renewal without a fresh prescription, government inspectors said in a report Thursday (9/27).

The Wall Street Journal: Making The ?Pharmacy Crawl?
The clampdown by Florida and at least seven other states has left some pain-sufferers struggling to get their medicine. That has put drug-enforcement and public-health officials at odds with some doctors and patients legitimately prescribed the pills. Several states now make doctors criminally liable and revoke their licenses for writing prescriptions for painkillers that lead to overdoses, prompting many to stop prescribing them at all. Other states have tightened regulation of pain clinics, forcing so-called pill mills to close but leaving people in need of pain medications with fewer doctors (Martin, 9/26).

The Associated Press/Washington Post: Md. Health Reform Panel To Vote On State?s Benchmark Health Benefit Plan
A Maryland panel working on implementing federal health care reform is planning to take a vote on the state?s benchmark health benefit plan. The Maryland Health Care Reform Coordinating Council is scheduled to meet Thursday in Annapolis (9/27).

Attending online school may be the best solution busy people have. This is because conventionally, to be able to get a degree, one must grind a lot of hours inside the campus to learn the course outline. In online colleges, a student has the say on when and where to complete the course. No need to battle the rush hour to get to school on time. With online universities, every single task a student must do is completed almost instantaneously. Thanks to the internet, term papers, quizzes, exams are done within a click of a mouse.

Busy people find it impossible to complete a degree using the conventional way. Because they have urgent and more important matters to deal with, going back to school to earn a degree is really a drag. But because of online education, their aspirations of earning that degree and getting a better job opportunity are well within reach.

The Use Of Polyurethanes In Automotive Air And Fluid Filters

Polyurethanes offer an attractive alternative to vinyl plastisols as adhesives in filters. Bayer MaterialScience LLC offers high-performance polyurethane-based adhesive filter systems that address the aforementioned shortcomings of using vinyl plastisol adhesives, as well as provide other advantages, such as lower energy requirements, a smaller production footprint, faster cycle times resulting in increased productivity, and the ability to replace the end-cap.

One of the most attractive benefits that polyurethane adhesives provide is the potential for material cost savings achieved through density reduction. Value analysis shows that processors using polyurethanes can save more than 25 percent on manufactured part costs when compared with vinyl plastisol.

Furthermore, the high-performance polyurethane compounds can actually be used to mold the end-cap itself, replacing the potting adhesive and metal and structural plastic components to further reduce costs.

Bayer MaterialScience LLC?s Peter Hyde-Smith, senior scientist, will discuss this subject while presenting ?The Use of Urethane in the Construction of Automotive Air and Fluid Filters,? 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, as part of the automotive session at the Center for the Polyurethane Industry?s Polyurethanes Technical Conference in Atlanta.

Ned Krause, principal scientist; Bradley Pederson, senior R&D specialist; and Dr. Ulrich Holeschovsky, business development manager, all of Bayer MaterialScience LLC, co-authored the paper with Hyde-Smith.

A number of Bayer polyurethane systems used in the construction of automotive air and fluid filtration are supplied in both filled and unfilled, foam and non-foam grades. As Hyde-Smith will address, Bayer?s Baydur? polyurethane system is used as a polyurethane adhesive. Depending on the grade, Bayer?s Baytec? polyurethane system can be used as a polyurethane adhesive or a polyurethane end-cap replacement compound, or both.

About Bayer MaterialScience LLC:

Adobe's HTML5 Edge development suite goes live today

Edge Animate

Adobe has kicked off their Edge development tool suite today with the release of Edge Animate and PhoneGap -- tools designed to develop HTML5 and wean the Internet off of Flash, as well as package things up for smartphones.

While this is exciting news for developers, its significance shouldn't be lost on the rest of us. I've been lamenting for weeks that Flash on the Internet won't ever die until easy to use and robust tools are provided, both to ease development time and costs as well as drive the platform (meaning pure HTML5 on the web) forward. The reason we ever needed Flash players on our computers or smartphones was because it was so easy to use it became the de facto web standard for interactive animations. Just because the Flash player for mobile was going the way of the dodo, didn't mean the existing content developers would abandon its use. Tools like the Edge suite are what it's going to take.

In addition to the full IDE for creating the content, Adobe has released a few other tools to assist web developers. Edge Inspect is a cross platform debugger, Edge WebFonts bundles over 500 free fonts (including two new fonts from Adobe) and the one we're pretty interested in -- PhoneGap. PhoneGap is a cloud based utility that can take HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript created with tools like Edge Animate and bundle it all up in an application for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, webOS, BlackBerry OS, Bada, or Symbian.

If you're a developer, be sure to head to Adobe's site, as Edge Animate is being offered for free as a promotion, and free beats $499 any day of the week. It looks like the gap left when Adobe killed off mobile Flash Player should be filling up nicely in short order. Quick -- someone tell Facebook.

Strength Training Exercises | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets ...

Strength training is the use of resistance to muscular contraction to build the strength, anaerobic endurance, and size of skeletal muscles. There are many different methods of strength training, the most common being the use of gravity or elastic/hydraulic forces to oppose muscle contraction. See the resistance training article for information about elastic/hydraulic training, but note that the terms ?strength training? and ?resistance training? are often used interchangeably.
When properly performed, strength training can provide significant functional benefits and improvement in overall health and well-being, including increased bone, muscle, tendon and ligament strength and toughness, improved joint function, reduced potential for injury, increased bone density, a temporary increase in metabolism, improved cardiac function, and elevated HDL (good) cholesterol. Training commonly uses the technique of progressively increasing the force output of the muscle through incremental increases of weight, elastic tension or other resistance, and uses a variety of exercises and types of equipment to target specific muscle groups. Strength training is primarily an anaerobic activity, although some proponents have adapted it to provide the benefits of aerobic exercise through circuit training.
Strength training differs from bodybuilding, weightlifting, powerlifting, and strongman, which are sports rather than forms of exercise, although training for them is inherently interconnected with strength training, as it is for shotput, discus, and Highland games. Many other sports use strength training as part of their training regimen, notably football, wrestling, rugby, rowing, lacrosse, basketball, hockey, and track and field.

Google adds mouse lock to stable Chrome 22 for 3D shooter mavens

Google's fast-track approach to updating Chrome gives a different theme to each update: last time, it was all about visual acuity. For the just launched Chrome 22 stable version, the focus swings to gaming. Web apps can now lock in the mouse control for first-person shooters, simulations and other 3D content that needs the full attention of the pointer during play. Not keen on action games through the browser? There's still some fine-tuning in place for those who live on the cutting edge, including Windows 8 users and Retina MacBook Pro owners. The update may already be sitting on your computer if you're running Chrome; if not, you can get your gaming-friendly fix (and the security notes) through the source links.

Go Gingham Fed Up with Frenzy Book Giveaway

I have a special treat for Go Gingham readers today ? a giveaway for a newly released book by author Susan (?Suz?) Sachs Lipman. The book is ?Fed Up with Frenzy,? and will surely be dogged-eared and marked-up by parents everywhere who are looking for ways to slow down and reconnect with their families.

Suz is a parenting and family expert whose blog is Slow Family Online and she?s also the Social Media Director for the international Children & Nature Network.

Suz and I have met virtually through our mutual friend, Amy Suardi. Amy writes the blog Frugal Mama, where Suz and I are both contributors. While Suz and I haven?t met in person (yet!), she and I are kindred spirits.

We share a love of slowing down, making family time a priority, and doing simple activities together.

This book is an excellent resource for families who want to break out of the technological grind and spend quality time together doing activities that are enjoyable and don?t cost a lot of money.

The book is filled with ideas for spending time in nature, in the kitchen, and the garden, together as a family. There?s also a section on celebrating simply which is good to remind myself of heading into the upcoming holiday season ? and birthday season at our house!

There are directions for playing games and activities you probably played as a child but may have forgotten. You?ll find card games, travel games, and outdoor games, that will keep your family having fun whether you?re at home or on the go.

As a parent of two teenagers, I?ll also add that the introduction is particularly heartwarming. It?s written by Suz?s daughter, Anna, who is 16-years-old.

At the back of the book, you?ll find a list of resources in both print and web formats, to inspire you further.

ECB Headquarters Cost Overruns Not Good PR

Preaching austerity is easy, but the European Central Bank (ECB) has found that it can be difficult to put the virtue in the practice.

CNBC content available by kind permission of CNBC

By: Laurie Laird, Deputy News Editor, CNBC.com

The ECB on Thursday announced a significant overrun in the cost of its new headquarters, due for completion in 2014. A series of mishaps - an inconclusive tender process and a failure to identify structural problems in the new site - has pushed the final bill to as much as 1.2 billion euros ($ 1.56 billion), up from an original estimate of 850 million euros.

The EBC has laid out less than half of the projected total cost, raising the possibility that the total bill could rise further. The new headquarters will accommodate a 40 percent expansion of current personnel. The ECB declined to comment on hiring plans, but any move to expand the ECB?s role in bank supervision would require staffing increases.

Funding for the new premises comes from the ECB?s profits on its investment earnings and interest income. That could include revenues earned through bond purchases intended to dampen interest rates in highly-indebted euro zone countries.

Back in February, European finance ministers pledged to return profits on bond purchases to member countries, but it is not clear whether those funds have been funneled back to sovereign nations.

The ECB recorded a profit of 728 million euros in 2011 and will retain eight percent of that this year. The remainder is distributed to euro member countries in accordance to their paid up capital. Greece accounts for just under two percent of the ECB?s shareholding.

The move to the new headquarters is actually intended to save money, said Andrea Jurges, communications officer at the ECB, pointing out the bank is currently housed in rented quarters. ?Most of the reason [for the construction of new premises] is that its cost-prudent to build than to continue renting.?

'DWTS' gives judges option to dish out 1/2 points

Adam Taylor / ABC

Judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli will have the ability to give half points this season.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Remember when "Dancing With the Stars" executive Conrad Green said this summer that the judging may be recalibrated a bit? On Monday, ABC announced how the ballroom bash will be doing that.

Starting with Monday night's premiere, judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba will be able to give whole and half points up to the usual 10. That means instead of just 1 through 10 paddles, the judges can whip out a 7.5 ?if they so wish. The reason, ABC explained, is to "accommodate and reflect the higher degrees of difficulty" that the all-star contestants will bring to the ballroom bash.

"With the standard of dancing so high and the qualities of our stars so closely matched, we thought it would help the judges to be able to make finer distinctions between performances this season," Green said in a statement.

Season eight champ Shawn Johnson, who is competing again in "All-Stars" and will be sharing her experience with The Clicker, also pointed out this season's higher skill set. "The standard and level of dancing is different in the first week (for 'All-Stars')," she told us. It's a completely new world that we're stepping into. ... People are so good, you have to be critical, you have to pick out the little thing because you have to find the differences in what makes one person a little better from the other."

And it looks like this season, that little thing will be that tiny half point.

"Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars" premieres at 8 p.m. on ABC.

What do you think about the scoring tweak? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!
