FBI: Newborn baby dies on Carnival cruise ship

WESH.com

The FBI says it?s investigating how a newborn baby died aboard a cruise ship that has returned to Port Canaveral.

FBI Spokesman Agent Dave Couvertier stated that an FBI Evidence Response Team boarded the ship when it arrived in Port Canaveral Saturday morning.

In an emailed statement, Couvertier said, "We have been coordinating with Carnival CL which has been fully cooperative."

A Carnival Cruise Lines news release says the deceased baby was found dead in a guest cabin on Wednesday, Oct 12. The ship was docked in St. Maartin in the Virgin Islands at that time.

Carnival?s statement says "Law enforcement authorities were advised and subsequently a 20-year-old female guest who was traveling on board the ship was detained pending further investigation."

Couvertier added, "No one has been charged we are still working on getting facts and gathering any available evidence. Therefore no info is being released (regarding) suspects. As we currently understand it, the baby's mother is not from Florida and has not returned to the U.S. yet. "

Investigators said the child?s mother was being detained outside of the U.S. while the investigation continued.
