The Earnings Boom (The Motley Fool)

If the economy's limping along, you'd never know it by looking at earnings estimates.

Forecasts for the S&P 500 call for the index to earn $98 this year and $112 next year. That's up from $84 in 2010, and $87 during the last peak in 2006. Put those numbers against an S&P trading well under 1,300, and you see why plenty of investors think stocks are cheap. We're talking 13 times forward earnings.

But put those numbers against 9% unemployment, slowing gross domestic product growth, declining housing prices, and more than $14 trillion in national debt, and you can see why citing analyst estimates are often famous last words.

So who's right? The bulls or the skeptics?

Let's talk for a second about bubbles.

There are two types of bubbles that lead to big losses.

The first is a valuation bubble. Stocks with no earnings trading at 100 times sales are in a valuation bubble. The late 1990s was a valuation bubble. LinkedIn (Nasdaq: LNKD - News) the day it went public was a valuation bubble.

The second is a little more tricky. It's an earnings bubble. In an earnings bubble, valuations look good, but how a company makes money is unsustainable. The best example is banks last decade. Even at the top of the housing boom, banks like Bank of America (NYSE: BAC - News) and Citigroup (NYSE: C - News) traded at reasonable multiples of earnings and paid solid dividends. It was how they earned money that was outrageously out of whack.

When you look at S&P earnings today, the biggest risk is that we're in the latter -- an earnings bubble. Or maybe not a bubble, but a cyclical peak. As Fool Alex Dumortier showed last year, corporate profits as a percentage of GDP are solidly above average. Corporate profit margins are also at an 18-year high. Both of these tend to be mean-reverting and give ammo to the skeptics. It's hard to expect profits to keep growing when, by almost any measure, they're already so high. This is a valid worry that shouldn't be overlooked.

But there are counterpoints, too.

Many wonder how earnings can be so high when the economy is so low. Nine percent unemployment and record corporate profits is a puzzle, particularly for an economy driven overwhelmingly by consumer spending.

But the 9% unemployment figure we throw around can be misleading. During the Great Depression, someone who lived through it recently told me, no one had money. Everyone was hurting. (An exaggeration, but only slightly.) It's not like that today. Ten percent, maybe 20%, of the economy is hurting mightily, but for a large portion -- maybe half the economy -- today is as good as it's ever been. It's pure bifurcation. If you're an unemployed carpenter underwater on your home in Las Vegas, it's bad. If you're a software engineer in Silicon Valley, you're turning down job offers left and right and basking in raises. Media headlines focus almost entirely on the former, but the strength of the latter has been enough to push consumer spending to record heights. That earnings have followed isn't surprising.

Something else to consider is how global the S&P 500 is. Ten years ago, less than a third of S&P revenue came from overseas. Today it's nearly half and growing. It's also where essentially all the growth lies. Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO - News) and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC - News) do the large majority of their business abroad. Companies such as Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT - News) are U.S.-centric, but gain essentially all their growth overseas. Yet analysts and commentators laser-focus their attention on the U.S. economy when guessing where earnings are heading. Why? A tepid U.S. economy coupled with solid growth from Asia and South America will drive profits higher. And that's about what's happening now.

Finally, productivity growth is still high as companies remember how to be efficient after the 2008-2009 meltdown. Redundant workers are gone. Cost-saving technology is flooding in. That sets up a lopsided trade-off between employees and shareholders, as Felix Salmon noted this week: "When unemployment is low, productivity gains go to labor," he wrote. "When unemployment is high, they go to capital."

Could the strong 50%-60% of the economy turn south? Of course. Could China's growth hit a wall? Absolutely. Could the tide shift from capital to labor? Yes. There are no guarantees the earnings boom will continue. But if I had to bet, I'd say it's the real deal. The biggest irony of the deepest U.S. recession in generations is that corporations quickly became stronger than ever.

Best Blogging Camcorders ? What to Look for in a Blogging ...

Although blogging was undoubtedly being done a decade ago, the upward trend of social media networking has drastically increased the number of bloggers available. Not merely is blogging used as a forum for personal views and family members updates, but also as a marketing and advertising tool for companies, corporations, organizations, and people with goods and services to peddle. Blogs themselves have been turned into money-making enterprises via selling advertising space following building up traffic to the blog. The use of video on a blog can aid in pushing the blog up within the ranking of search engines. A camcorder may be a wise buy for a blogger. The most effective blogging camcorders have capabilities that make them simple to use and to transfer to the net.

The very first feature that the very best blogging camcorders have in typical is really a built-in USB port. This indicates which you basically plug the camera into the personal computer or laptop and upload video to a blog without discovering cords or pulling out memory cards. The much better designs for these ports are ones that flip out directly from the camcorder or pop out from the device. Those which can be folded in on a short cord are more like to break easily.

Second, high quality is important so that visitors to the blog do not grow frustrated with grainy video. Folks have swiftly turn into accustomed to high definition, or 1080p resolution. All wonderful blogging camcorders really should record in 1080p. This top quality is accessible even at a cost point of 150 and under.

The top blogging camcorders will have easy editing computer software built in so that the video will likely be completely ready prior to uploading to a weblog, YouTube, or Facebook. Other possible features can contain image stabilization to compensate for shaky hands or movement whilst filming and optical zoom to focus on things which might be farther away. Some even have the capacity to attach microphones or headphones.

The form of memory can vary inside the top blogging camcorders. Some models have built-in memory even though others save to SD cards. Both approaches have pros and cons. Eight gigabytes of built-in internal memory will allow you to capture two hours worth of filming. Nonetheless, it is not expandable. Prior to videoing again, you will want to upload the contents to your computer. An eight gigabyte SD card only enables for about 90 minutes of filming, but if you have extra SD cards, they are able to just be switched out for additional memory.

EU leaders give conditional go-ahead to Croatia entry (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? European Union leaders gave the go-ahead on Friday for Croatia to join the EU, after six years of preparations marred by slow democratic reforms in Zagreb and the EU's reluctance to expand.

The former Yugoslav state of 4.4 million people should be able to wrap up accession negotiations next week, they said at a summit in Brussels, but warned the Zagreb government that it has to continue to fight widespread corruption with "vigor."

The recommendation marks a turnaround for Croatia, which struggled for years to convince the EU's 27 governments that its judiciary reforms would produce genuine results and prove it has recognized its role in the Balkan wars in the 1990s.

However, its efforts will face more EU scrutiny, and its hopes of joining the EU in July 2013 could be jeopardized if reform slip-ups persuade some of the EU's national parliaments to delay ratifying the accession treaty.

"Now it is important to ensure that Croatia's reforms are sustainable and irreversible," Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said.

Several EU governments, led by Britain and the Netherlands, pushed for strict monitoring of Croatia during the ratification process and had insisted that the completion of talks remains open-ended.

But others wanted a more clear message. Many EU politicians are hopeful that rewarding Croatia for a last-minute reform push will persuade other governments in the western Balkans that the EU is willing to accept new members if they are ready.

"Croatia demonstrates that if a country meets our strict conditionality, we as the European Union respect our commitments," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso told a news conference.

BALANCING ACT

EU enlargement is likely to remain on the backburner in the coming years, however, with voters around the continent wary of its cost at a time of economic austerity, but policymakers are eager to unlock democratic reforms in the Balkans.

Referring to Croatia's accession progress, the EU leaders said in a statement: "These developments bring a new momentum to the European perspective of the western Balkans, provided these countries continue on the path of reform."

They also offered encouragement to Serbia, which hopes to win the official status of EU candidate in the coming months, after the arrest of Ratko Mladic, a wartime general wanted by a United Nations tribunal on genocide charges.

Apprehending Mladic "constitutes a positive step for international justice as well as for Serbia's EU perspective," they said.

Croatia's reluctance to come to terms with its own past during the bloody collapse of Yugoslavia in the 1990s had also hurt its EU aspirations in recent years.

During the 1993-94 Croat-Muslim conflict in Bosnia - a brief but bloody sideshow to the main war with the Bosnian Serbs - Zagreb backed, financed and armed hardline kin in Bosnia, who wanted to ethnically cleanse their territory and join Croatia.

One reason behind Croatia's leap toward accession in recent months, EU diplomats say, was the arrest of former prime minister Ivo Sanader, who had been sought on charge of graft.

Croatia also got a push from the Hungarian government, which lobbied strongly to wrap up negotiations during its six-month presidency of the EU that ends next week.

Hungary and Croatia have shared a joint history for centuries, since Croatia was part of the Hungarian kingdom. Budapest's first freely elected government after the fall of communism actively supported Croatia's efforts to secede from Yugoslavia.

Croatia, the richest of EU hopefuls in the Balkans and which relies heavily on tourism, is hoping that accession will bolster its appeal to foreign funds at a time when Europe's financial woes have slashed direct investment in the region.

"We have worked hard for six years and we deserve this," Croatia's state secretary for European integration, Andrej Plenkovic, told Reuters in an interview.

Airbus piles pressure on Boeing (Reuters)

LE BOURGET, France (Reuters) ? Airbus dominated the Paris Air Show on Tuesday with a stream of new orders for its fuel-efficient A320neo and hammered out a long-awaited final deal with an Indian airline that will set a new record in terms of numbers of planes sold.

Indian budget carrier IndiGo is set to unveil on Wednesday the $16 billion order for 180 Airbus aircraft, the biggest boost to date for the revamped A320neo.

The hike in oil prices this year has helped spur a rush of orders for more fuel-efficient aircraft at the show, giving a boost to Airbus's revamped A320neo passenger jet.

But this has increased pressure on arch-rival Boeing and limited scope for newcomers Russia and China.

European plane maker Airbus notched up $25.9 billion of orders by the second day, outselling U.S. rival Boeing's $19.1 billion. Early on Tuesday, the Airbus sales chief said it had 544 commitments for its new A320 aircraft, including a memorandum of understanding with leasing company CIT for 50.

The healthy demand from buyers has provided evidence that a solid upswing in civil aviation is underway, powered by emerging markets in Asia. High fuel prices have also given buyers a new sense of urgency to buy fuel-efficient planes.

"It highlights the pressure that mature airlines are under to make themselves more efficient and have up-to-date aircraft," said Howard Wheeldon, senior strategist at London brokerage BGC Partners.

China and Russia are under the spotlight at the show as they try to enter the market for passenger jets with more than 100 seats. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited the show on Tuesday to tout his country's aerospace industry.

More established newcomers from Brazil and Canada, are also edging into Airbus and Boeing territory by building planes with 120-130 seats in additional to regional jets.

Long-time rivals Boeing and Airbus are locked in a strategy battle over the huge market for single-aisle aircraft. These narrow-body planes, the backbone of the fast-growing budget airline market, are set to be the main battleground for orders between Airbus and Boeing at the biennial show.

Airbus is marketing a revamped version of its A320 and Boeing is holding back on deciding whether to upgrade or redesign its 737 passenger jet, the best-selling plane in aviation history.

"I think it is going to be a different conversation at the end of the week, depending on what Airbus achieves this week in terms of orders for the neo," Henri Courpron, Chief Executive of International Finance Lease Corporation, the world's largest aircraft leasing company told Reuters.

"So if we assume, based on rumors and reports, that the (Airbus) neo is going to be a great success this week, then it prompts Boeing to do something. It cannot do nothing," he said.

Airbus believes it has the upper hand with the A320neo, whose more efficient engines save airlines 15 percent in fuel costs, according to the company.

Boeing conceded it might lose some custom while it ponders the future of its 737. The firm said on Sunday it would decide by year-end on its new strategy.

EMERGING PLAYERS

Moscow is pushing for Russian companies to up their spending on research and development as the government tries to diversify the economy away from oil and gas and resources.

Russian planemaker Sukhoi is to bring a business jet version of its regional airliner to the market, showing the country's intent to make an impact on the international aircraft business.

Sukhoi has signed a memorandum of understanding to sell 12 of its Superjet 100 mid-size aircraft to Indonesia's Sky Aviation, a spokeswoman said.

SuperJet International is a joint venture between Italian Finmeccanica's Alenia and Sukhoi. "We are targeting a market of between 80 and 100 aircraft over the next 20 years," SuperJet International CEO Carlo Logli said.

China has come to the show for the first time with a model of its own passenger jet.

Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac) expects to have its C919 aircraft up and running by 2014 with first deliveries two years later.

The plane could eventually rival Airbus' A320 and Boeing's 737 in the short- and medium-haul market. It has signed a deal with budget carrier Ryanair for aircraft development.

Brazil's Embraer, the market leader in the regional jet market, sees "good chances" of firm orders from U.S. carrier Delta Air Lines.

"Our expectation is that Delta decides about all this in October ... they are in talks with everyone," Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva, who heads Embraer's commercial aviation unit, said in an interview with Reuters at the show.

UN: Deaths up from cancer, diabetes, heart disease

EDITH M. LEDERER
Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS ? Nearly two-thirds of deaths in the world are caused by noncommunicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart and lung disease which are rapidly increasing at a cost to the global economy of trillions of dollars, according to U.N. estimates and preliminary results of a new study.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a report circulated Monday that while the international community has focused on communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, the four main noncommunicable diseases "have emerged relatively unnoticed in the developing world and are now becoming a global epidemic."

According to the report, 36 million people died from noncommunicable diseases in 2008, representing 63 percent of the 57 million global deaths that year. Nearly 80 percent of deaths from these diseases were in the developing world, and 9 million deaths were of men and women under the age of 60, it said.

In 2030, the report said, these diseases are projected to claim the lives of 52 million people.

Ban said the rapidly increasing magnitude of noncommunicable diseases is fueled by rising risk factors including tobacco use, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, obesity and harmful alcohol use ? and is driven in part by an aging population, the negative impact of urbanization, and the globalization of trade and marketing.

At a press conference Monday to preview a U.N. summit in September that will spotlight the need to tackle these diseases, John Seffrin, CEO of the American Cancer Society, said that by 2030 noncommunicable diseases are expected to cause five times as many deaths as communicable diseases worldwide.

"No health problem in the history of the world has ever gone so hidden, misunderstood and under-recorded," Seffrin said.

Seffrin said "it is the poorest people that suffer the most" because they can't afford early detection and quality care and must deal with overburdened and poorly equipped health care systems.

He called for urgent action to start solving "what will be the 21st century's greatest health challenge, namely noncommunicable diseases."

Professor David Bloom of the Harvard School of Public Health, who is leading a project to estimate the global economic burden of noncommunicable diseases, said preliminary results indicate that the substantial economic burden caused by these diseases today "will evolve into a staggering economic burden over the next two decades" that could have a huge impact on economic development and fighting poverty.

The project, which is sponsored by the World Economic Forum, is estimating the global costs of newly diagnosed cancer cases at "more than $300 billion in 2010" and of "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on the order of $400 billion in 2010," he said.

Bloom said his researchers also estimate a loss of economic output amounting to $35 trillion during the 25-year period from 2005 to 2030 due to a key group of noncommunicable diseases ? diabetes, ischemic heart disease including strokes, cerebral vascular disease, chronic destructive pulmonary disease, and breast cancer.

He said $35 trillion represents seven times the current level of global health spending, 15 times the 2011 value of overseas development assistance in the world over the past quarter century, and could massively reduce poverty in the world.

Both the human and economic burden of noncommunicable diseases can be contained, Bloom said, by devoting resources directly or indirectly to prevention, screening and treatment throughout the world.

Trustee says defer Blockbuster lawyers' pay (Reuters)

WILMINGTON, Delaware (Reuters) ? Bankrupt video store chain Blockbuster Inc has so little remaining value that its lawyers and advisers should not be paid their outstanding fees and expenses at this time, the U.S. trustee overseeing the bankruptcy said in a court filing.

The trustee, Tracy Hope Davis, also questioned whether the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP could be compensated nearly $70,000 for work related to the company's plan of reorganization, which ultimately collapsed.

Weil did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy last year, initially with a plan to reorganize as a scaled-back movie rental chain owned by its main secured creditors: billionaire investor Carl Icahn and several hedge funds.

However, after poor year-end holiday sales, the chain was put up for sale. It was purchased in an auction by Dish Network Corp for $320 million, less than half the total owed to secured creditors.

The trustee, a Department of Justice official, said the lawyers, financial advisers and auditors had already received 80 percent of their requested fees. She said the balance should be deferred at this time because paying it could prevent other so-called administrative claims from being paid.

"Debtors are currently in the process of determining the extent to which they are administratively insolvent," the trustee said in the filing, made on Friday.

The trustee's request "is not uncommon and certainly more common in cases as administratively insolvent as Blockbuster is," said Scott Stuart, a partner Donlin Recano, which manages bankruptcy claims.

Stuart, formerly with the U.S. Trustee's Office, said the lawyers and advisers would likely discuss the fee applications with the trustee and might take voluntary reductions.

It is very rare that lawyers and advisers are not paid in large bankruptcies.

"Normally, when you go into these things you have sufficient cash to pay the professionals who are leading the restructuring," said Stephen French of Legalbill, a company that manages legal spending.

The case is in re: Blockbuster Inc, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No 10-14997.

Creative TMI: Metaphorically Speaking, Of Course

A request made by a friend of mine.: I guess writing in this manner makes me feel the writing is forced, or too wax poetic, of which I was once accused of over using by my ex-husband. That is why I try and stay away from it. Is it painting too much of a picture. Truth be told, I found it difficult to write and keep a straight face. Meaning my eyes wrinkled up as I pushed my fingers into the very tight inkwell hole and began to make the third to the last line. Metaphorically speaking of course.

Growing up in Carrollton, Texas we had this painting my mom bought to go with the seventies Spanish Iron furniture they also bought; it was of a still life...a peeled orange next to a vinegar bottle, and had a glass of red wine off to the side. Man was it a dark fake. I was always puzzled at that painting. You know how we place things like a picture in specific spots, but do you ever really look at them after you made the choice? Do you really LOOK at them, study them, or do you just dust them off each week as it blends in to our surroundings. Sort of like a photographers musings along their path.

In anticipation of Lil'sista, I found it hard to go to sleep and woke up early, as usual, and began thinking of how I could lay in bed all day because I was just plain tired. Of how things would still change around me, even if I continued to lay there. I also watched 'Stripped: Greg Friedler's Naked Las Vegas', by David Palmer before I fell asleep. Must have impacted my thinking. Or was it Greg's blog, and his still life's of fruits and such? Hmmm, does art really imitate life...

Still Life
as requested by Jeanne

I sit, quietly on the edge of an island
of blankets as the world turns
spinning schedules before the day

ever begins. Morning shadows start tripping
across my lap, stretching obscure minute men
who under your nose steal the thunder

aimed at hearts filled with memory
and pain. A shelter of hoarding rises up with
empty vessel lined shelves; in waiting

they mirror me, ready for random target practice
when an ocean of tears breaks free of its barriers
and keep me prisoner in this spot, where day began.

On this black leather sofa planet crust
evenings darkness meld and break me free.
Floating along the red hot lava of desire

I scavenge up nourishment, and exercise
the will to bend my legs. But it all pulls me under
sinking what I was crafting as a get away boat.

Metaphorically I am like my photo, many flavors, layers, and what you see is not always what you might get. Ha!

Jeanne how was this? and it is a first draft, not sure there will be another...I will let it simmer in my mind pot...

Google follows through on ?mobile first? philosophy (Appolicious)

Capitalizing on Google (GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt?s promise last year to make ?mobile first? in an effort to commit to phone software development and global accessibility, the company announced Monday the addition of image queries and voice search to its desktop offerings from its existing mobile operations.

From the mobile image recognition app Google Goggles, Google has added image queries to the desktop, allowing users to ask Google to recognize what is depicted in a photo or drawing by pasting the image into the search box. Whereas voice search, which is now offered for any computer user with a microphone, has come from Google?s Android operating system and its search and maps applications for other types of mobile phones.

?Mobile first in everything,? Schmidt said at last year?s Mobile World Congress. ?Mobile first in terms of applications. Most first in terms of the way people use things. And it means ? that we have a role now to inform, to educate through all these devices.? He noted that programmers for the company more often want to work with mobile prior to the desktop.

PCWorld noted that Google?s moves from mobile to desktop mirror similar moves by Ubuntu?s Linux new Unity interface and Apple?s Mac OS X Lion. Apple (AAPL) borrowed the automatic saving of documents, push notifications and more multitouch gesture control from iOS when creating Lion. Additionally, Windows 8 strongly mirrors Microsoft?s (MSFT) mobile interface, offering full-screen apps and a built-in app store.

As more and more users turn to smartphones for their Internet needs and wants, it makes more sense for companies such as Google, Apple and Microsoft to test out their innovations first with on-the-go consumers rather than desktop-bound users. So this smartphone-addicted user, along with many others, encourages the mobile march to move onward and upward.

NBA Season Post Mortem: Who is happier: Mavs or Cavs?

It does not take? Jeff van Gundy?s expert comments, or Chuck Barkley?s over-smart reviews to guess who is more jubilant right now! Against all odds, one can dare say the Dallas Mavericks were not the team anyone expected to lift this year?s Larry O?Brian trophy, they were not even in the top 3 for that matter. With a postseason revolving around ?The Decision? , ?The Party?, ?The D-Rose? and ?The bruised index finger? (yes LeBron fans, not everything is about him in NBA, not right now), there were three or four separate entities vying for the cup. LeBron and the Heat (Apologies to D-Wade, he chose to be LBJ?s wing man) , Kobe and LA (what a fall), D-Rose and Bulls (they are still young and going strong) and the veteran Celtics (there is always that last shot).

Humbled in the finals he may be, but LeBron James deserves appreciation for his sheer talent, not rebuke for betraying Cleveland

While South Beach was jubilant, Cleveland was distraught, bellicose and badmouthing LeBron from all angles. From potentially the worst record in the league, to giving away their last all-star in Mho Williams, nothing at all has worked right for the Cavs this season. The Mavericks were noticeable in an optimum light, consistency, old school plays etc. But Cavaliers were in news for all the wrong reasons all season long. Probably, when a state full of admirers turn to wish you ill-will, that is when you lose 4-2 in NBA finals with buddies in top 5 players of the NBA currently and hall-of-famers-to-be.

Which brings the question, who is more satisfied this season? The Mavericks pulled out a rabbit from the hat, no doubts there. Cleveland never had a chance to begin with, no questions there as well. Mavericks won, they must have partied hard? that night. Lebron lost, and Cleveland is still pondering over ways to mark the occassion.

NBA media, wronged team mates and others who thought LeBron was wrong,do not realize that this man is the most gifted ball player in generations, with size ,skill and speed unmatched. And he is playing in his prime. Is it not time one stopped to think, maybe the negative influence is catching up to him? People are losing a chance to witness brilliance by going over menial issues of contracts, fan following and what not. LeBron will come back next season, he will have a high chance to lift the trophy, but the atmosphere is unlikely to change. ?It might be more hostile, if at all. Why does no one say??Give the man what he deserves, due respect for talent?. Ardent ball players will know, ardent fans.. not so sure!

No offense to Dirk Nowitzki, a legend in himself. But the story will always be about LeBron, for better or worse, much like it was for Kobe in the past decade. ?Time to move on Cleveland? 2012 will tell.

Meanwhile, let us not forget the other sob story, somewhere in Hollywood. Kobe and Co. faced the worst defeat a 2-time championship team could, and yet stand tall to confront it. With Phil Jackson?s departure and fade-away of the triangle offense , what do they have in store? Mike Brown, a cavalier? Ironic indeed. All odds point to the fact that Lakers this season have been a poor defensive team when matched up with title contenders. Mike Brown?s defensive mindset should be of assistance in this regard. But look at the roster.. an ex-super star, a low-in-confidence 7 footer all star, a 37 year old starting point guard, and a bench who is yet to prove their mettle? (Let us not even start talking about Ron-Ron for the sake of verbosity). Clearly, a new player, some young feet, and a dominant centre are in demand in LA, if they are to start strong and finish with authority this season.

That said, another ageing army of veterans is in the east. They call themselves the Celtics, have a storied rivalry with their western counterparts in the Lakers, and were destroyed by LeBron James this year. Last year we heard this was going to be their one last all-out attempt to get back the rings. But things have happened. Rondo?s arm, KG?s off-days, and Perkins exit, not an ideal combination to say the least for a team going up against Lebron,Wade,Bosh,D-Rose and others. But here we are, 1 more season, 1 more attempt. If Celtics have anything to learn from Rondo, it is this ?Never give up,never give in?.

Perfect Body ? the new fitness trends !!! | About Asthma General ...

ROLLMASSAGE The power of infrared light and a relaxing roll massage combined in one! The roll-massage is a new fitness trend and an enjoyable way to gain a beautiful and slim figure. It works using profiled, wooden rolls that massage the entire body. The massaged skin becomes firmer and smoother as a result of the improved circulation in the lymphatic system. The additional deep-tissue body penetration through infrared light works to maximize effectiveness and relaxation. Altogether, this allows for the elimination of factors that foster cellulite formation and prevents circulation problems. SELF MASSAGE BED The bed is suggested to those who do not like or do not want to go to the gym to work out but wish to improve their health condition or lose weight. It may be a great alternative especially to those who have a seated job, are overweight, just gave birth, have asthma, suffer from circulation problems or water absorption disorders. The massage bed does not burden the heart muscle, cause breathlessness or increase blood pressure. VACUUM THERAPY (known as ENDODERMOMASSAGE) is classified as the most effective way of losing cellulite and excess fat worldwide! The intermittent suction action unblocks the blood and oxygen flow in tissues, increases the lymph circulation and consequently eliminates the excess fluid and metabolites, stretches the connective tissue, stimulates the collagen production, and facilitates fat metabolism. The result is a smoother, more contoured body ?

Sex and Atlantic City: Casino resort heating up (AP)

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. ? Miss America and her tiara are gone, replaced by lingerie-wearing blackjack dealers, beverage servers in bustiers or fishnets, a million-dollar steakhouse/gentlemen's club and soon a "Naked Circus."

Three casinos have bikini beach bars on the sand. Outside the gambling halls, there are a half-dozen strip clubs and a sex swingers/voyeurs club; (Coming up: "Men's Shirt and High Heels Night," the suggested attire for women.) Even the famous New York strip club Scores wants to open a branch in an Atlantic City casino.

It's all part of an effort to attract new business and fight off competition from casinos in neighboring states. The emphasis on sexiness is designed to appeal to a younger ? and hopefully more free-spending ? crowd.

Ever since gambling started in the nation's second-largest casino market in 1978, Atlantic City has been torn over whether to market itself as a family resort, or as Sin City East. Guess which side is winning?

"In our industry, the casino and entertainment and hospitality business, you want to provide things that are pleasing and exciting and fun," said Dennis Gomes, co-owner of Resorts Hotel Casino. "One of the things that most people find pleasing, exciting and fun is sex."

His casino is testing the boundaries of Atlantic City, which for all its history as a bawdy vice destination at the turn of the century ? witness the HBO hit series "Boardwalk Empire" about crooked politicians, brothels and speakeasies ? has been rather tame when it comes to sex as a marketing tool. The low-cut flapper dresses Resorts is making its female beverage servers wear have already generated two lawsuits from older women who say they were fired for being judged insufficiently sexy in them.

Resorts raised some eyebrows, and the ire of New Jersey's public transit agency, when it put up a billboard featuring a dancer's bare bottom to promote a stage show. And next month, Gomes promises, the casino will host a nightly "Naked Circus" in a parking lot tent.

The Tropicana Casino and Resort, Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, and the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa all dress beverage servers and even some dealers in lingerie or similarly revealing, cleavage-enhancing costumes. Bally's Atlantic City has its iCandy Burlesque dancers at a casino lounge.

If it seems like Atlantic City is trying to catch up to Las Vegas ? the original Sin City ? it is. The Diving Horse, a $1 million-plus gentlemen's club/steakhouse, opened two weeks ago with Vegas on its mind.

"The Diving Horse is bringing the Las Vegas-style gentlemen's club to the Northeast," spokeswoman Shannon Niland said. "Vegas does that type of entertainment for a reason: sex sells."

Atlantic City has had to walk a fine line in promoting itself as an edgier, sexier resort without alienating more conservative customers. Its current motto is "Always Turned On" ? not quite as risque as "What Happens In Vegas Stays In Vegas."

"We've always looked to promote Atlantic City as a sensual destination, and we started to push the envelope a little more," said Jeff Vasser, executive director of the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Bureau. "But you have to balance it. At the end of the day, we are still a community that existed long before it was a casino town. We could never get away with `What Happens Here Stays Here.'"

Marc Meltzer, who runs a marketing agency and several gambling/travel websites, is encouraged Atlantic City is trying something different to draw attention to itself. Before moving to Las Vegas in November, the 37-year-old would visit Atlantic City every six weeks, favoring Harrah's Resort and the Borgata, whose scantily clad "Borgata Babes" were a highlight.

"The eye candy was top-notch," he said. "It's what attracts a 20- or 30-year-old guy. If he can go somewhere and look at a good-looking girl, all other things being equal, he'll go look at the good-looking girl. I enjoy rolling dice with the old men and looking at a good-looking girl. That's a good combination."

Bonita West, a human resources manager from Orange County, N.Y., says sexy casinos can't hurt.

"I hope they do polish up the ladies a little more, give me a run for my money!" she joked. "I have seen some humdrum (servers), and after a while they begin to blend in with the carpets. Let's make them just as eye-popping as the machines: catchy outfits that I might even envy. Give me some ideas I might want to use to stimulate my husband of 27 years. Let's make the atmosphere sexy!"

Not everyone agrees.

"Any time we objectify women, see them as part of the furniture or the decor, we put all women at risk of the type of behavior that objectification brings, like rape, domestic violence and sexual abuse," said Erin O'Hanlon, an official with The Women's Center, located just outside Atlantic City. "These are someone's mothers, wives, cousins, sisters, daughters. Some of them are undoubtedly doing this in order to support their families. It sends the message that women who are dressed this way are commodities."

One of Resorts' promotions pits customers against a costumed female employee at tic-tac-toe. Only here it's called "Chick-tac-toe" and customers are encouraged to see if they can "beat the bimbo."

Joseph Monek, a 74-year-old retiree from Bethlehem, Pa., says sexing up Atlantic City is not what the resort needs.

"The best bet is to improve the beach and the Boardwalk, and people will come, we hope, and bring some cash to the casinos," he said.

In announcing a plan to help rescue Atlantic City from its 4 1/2-year downward spiral last summer, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he envisioned the gambling resort as a more family-friendly place, with Ferris wheels and amusement parks to complement the casinos. A spokesman for the governor declined to comment this week.

The world famous Steel Pier has amusement rides and games, and there is a mini-golf course and an arcade on the Boardwalk, and an aquarium within driving distance. But there's decidedly less for families and kids to do here than there is for adults.

New Jersey's casino regulations prohibit nudity and real or simulated sex acts in the gambling halls. To comply with that, Scores would have to partially cover its dancers in pasties and G-strings, unlike their totally nude counterparts in New York City, if it were to get approval to open inside the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort. Their application has been pending for nearly a year, with no timetable set for a decision from the state Division of Gaming Enforcement.

For that same reason, Resorts' "Naked Circus" would also employ pasties and G-strings, though it would be restricted to those 21 and older.

HTC Desire tries to catch Gingerbread, can't keep up

After months attempting to bring the Desire up to speed with Android 2.3, HTC is throwing in the towel, and it doesn't have much more than a comments section full of disappointed handset owners to show for it. The UK branch of the phone manufacturer announced via its Facebook page that attempts to upgrade the Nexus One-esque smartphone to Gingerbread have proven fruitless, due to a lack of internal memory on the device. According to the company, the promised update just won't play nicely with its Sense UI. Those desiring less official methods can always check out the leaked 2.3.3 ROM. Everyone else will have to suffer through the Froyo brain freeze.
