Chloe Moretz Could Join Charlize Theron in Dark Places

Posted 1:29 AM April 2nd, 2013 by Binh Ngo

Chloe Grace Moretz is in talks to join Charlize Theron in the big screen adaptation of Gillian Flynn's mystery novel Dark Places, Deadline has learned. She will play a character named Diondra.

Theron is on board to produce and is set to play Libby, a woman who testified against her brother, Ben, as her family's murderer when she was 7 years old.

In the novel, a group of people calling themselves the Kill Club believe that Ben didn't commit the crime and want Libby's help to prove his innocence. The movie will probably be structured like the novel, with past events seen through flashbacks from the perspective of some of the major characters, including the dead ones.

French director Gilles Paquet-Brenner is adapting the novel and will direct from his own script.

Moretz is reprising her role as Hit-Girl in Universal's action-comedy Kick-Ass 2 and is playing the title character in the Carrie remake, both of which are coming out later this year.

Besides Dark Places, Moretz is also in talks to join Lynn Shelton's Laggies, a dark comedy in which she will play Anne Hathaway's best friend.

More about uploading photos to FamilySearch Family Tree

I got the following comment from Anonymous recently and decided to elaborate with a response:

So, I've had no luck uploading pictures to FamilySearch on my Apple computer. It looks like the website has changed a few things in the last week, but the program is still not working right on my Apple. There are untagged pictures I've uploaded showing (with exclamation points) when I look at "My Photos," but when I click on the exclamation point, the screen that loads and should allow me to tag them comes up basically blank. I tried both on Safari and Firefox. If you have an Apple and have been successful, what browser and version of that browser are you using? (I'm still on an older Firefox 3.6.18 and don't want to update.) Thanks for any help you can give me.
I guess the first question is whether or not Anonymous has registered and has access to both FamilySearch.org and FamilySearch.org/photos? If you haven?t signed into both programs this could be the problem. But it appears that this user is having technical problems with the program itself. The two programs are linked together and if a photo is uploaded to the Photos program, a thumbnail should show up for that person in Family Tree. The Photos program is still in Beta test and so changes are to be expected.? I have noticed some features, such a setting the default photo, which have not worked well, but seem to be working at the time of this post. I tried uploading three photos as I was writing this post and all three uploaded successfully. I am using the Google Chrome Bowser Version 26.0.1410.43 but I also use Firefox and Safari. Interestingly, the smallest of the three photos took the longest to load. The comment is correct, the photos show a red exclamation point after loading. This tells the user that the photos have yet to be tagged to any one individual. After clicking on the photo (it is not necessary to click on the red tag) I get the tagging screen and was able to tag the individuals in the photo. However, the program now has you go to the Tagged Person screen to connect the person to Family Tree and to do any editing. It is helpful to have the person?s ID number when you try to connect the person to Family Tree, especially if the person has a common name. For one of my ancestors, George Jarvis LWYL-M7G, I note that several copies of the exact same photo have been loaded into the program. Apparently, I cannot edit the duplicates and only the people who have uploaded the photos can remove them. I also note with George Jarvis LWYL-M7G that there is at least one ?Restricted? photo, meaning it does not conform to the FamilySearch standards or appears to be copyrighted. I am not sure how these issues are going to be resolved with various family members submitting photos. In short, using an Apple iMac computer and Chrome, I had no trouble uploading three photos and tagging them to the people in Family Tree. I can only assume that the commentator?s issues lie elsewhere. My best guess is that there is something about the photos he is uploading, either the file type or size that is making a problem.?

Plastic film is the future of 3-D on-the-go

Apr. 2, 2013 ? Mobile device users will soon be able to view brilliant 3D content with the naked eye with a nano-engineered screen protector that turns ordinary mobile screens into 3D displays. The unique plastic film can also potentially be used as next generation security tokens employed by banks and corporations.

Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering's (IMRE) new nano-engineered screen protector that turns the ordinary screens of handheld devices into 3D displays will be marketed by start-up, Nanoveu Pte Ltd. The unique plastic film can also potentially be used as next generation security tokens employed by banks and corporations.

Ditch the 3D glasses. Thanks to a simple plastic filter, mobile device users can now view unprecedented, distortion-free, brilliant 3D content with the naked eye. This latest innovation from TP and IMRE is the first ever glasses-free 3D accessory that can display content in both portrait and landscape mode, and measures less than 0.1 mm in thickness.

"The filter is essentially a piece of plastic film with about half a million perfectly shaped lenses engineered onto its surface using IMRE's proprietary nanoimprinting technology," said Dr Jaslyn Law, the IMRE scientist who worked with TP on the nanoimprinting R&D since 2010 to enhance the film's smoothness, clarity and transparency compared to other films in the market.

?To complement the filter, the team developed applications for two software platforms, Apple iOS and Android, which allow users to play 3D content through its filter, in both landscape and portrait formats. The applications also allow 2D pictures taken using mobile devices to be converted into 3D. The team will be releasing a software development kit that enables game developers to convert their existing games into 3D versions.

The team is also exploring using the same technology for security access tokens to decode PIN numbers sent online as an inexpensive and portable alternative to rival bulkier and more expensive battery-operated security tokens, similar to those used by Singapore banks today.

?"The team's expertise in both hardware and software development in 3D technology has enabled high quality 3D to be readily available to consumers," said Mr Frank Chan, the TP scientist who led the overall NRF-funded project. "We have taken age old lenticular lens technology that has been around for the last hundred years, modernised it and patented it using nanotechnology." Lenticular lens technology creates a transparent film that retains the brilliance of 3D visuals and effects, which does away with the need for stronger back lighting and saves on battery consumption in mobile devices.

?? The two-year project was initially funded under a National Research Foundation (NRF) Translational R&D Grant in Dec 2010 to look at optimising the control of the nanostructures and integrating its effects with the complementary software applications. The team has since shifted its focus towards commercialisation with support from Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), A*STAR's technology transfer arm and a one-stop resource that brings together home-grown technology, funding, collaboration and networks to assist A*STAR spin-offs and start-ups.

Prosecutor asks for death in Colo. theater shooting

James Holmes sits with defense attorney Tamara Brady during his arraignment on March 12. (AP)

[Updated at 1:16 p.m. MT]

CENTENNIAL, Colo.?Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler wasted little time Monday morning in announcing he will seek the death penalty against the man accused of shooting 70 people, killing 12, during a midnight attack at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater last summer.

"Justice is death," Brauchler told the court, minutes after the hearing started.

Brauchler said his office surveyed victims and hundreds of people connected to the massacre to help make the decision.

"I hope I can be in the room when he dies," said Bryan Beard, whose friend Alex Sullivan was killed in the theater. "If you cause death upon somebody, I believe the only justice is death."

Reporters in the courtroom said Holmes appeared to have no reaction to Brauchler's announcement. His parents, Robert and Arlene Holmes, reportedly clasped hands and then embraced when the DA disclosed his plan. A few people on the victims' side of the courtroom cried.

Holmes, who sat about 15 feet from his parents, made strong eye contact with them when he entered the courtroom.

Marcus Weaver, who was shot in the arm during the July 2012 attack, said he wished Holmes would admit to the killings: "Holmes has an exceptional opportunity to [tell] the world, 'Hey, I made a mistake, and I'm owning up to it.' Man up. Save us all the difficulty. Accept what you did. Accept your fate."

Weaver said he would rather see Holmes admit guilt than watch him die.

"You have an obligation ... if you're guilty to plead guilty," Weaver said.

In another development, 18th Judicial District Chief Judge William Sylvester told the court he has reassigned the Holmes case to Judge Carlos A. Samour.

Sylvester, the administrative judge for four counties, wrote that "logistical demands" and the "enormous consumption of resources" of a death penalty case necessitated the switch.

Samour took the bench after a short recess Monday morning. His first decision was to delay the start of the trial from Aug. 5, 2013, to Feb. 3, 2014. He projected the trial to last four months, despite Holmes' defense team arguing that they'll need longer.

"We will do what we need to do to defend his life," defense attorney Tamara Brady said in court. "This is not an ordinary case."

The decision to seek the death penalty follows last week?s legal theatrics in which Holmes? defense team said it would enter a guilty plea if the district attorney settled on a life-in-prison sentence.

?It is Mr. Holmes? position that this case could be resolved on April 1,? his public defenders announced last Wednesday in court filings posted online by the Denver Post. ?Mr. Holmes made an offer to the prosecution to resolve this case by pleading guilty and spending the rest of his life in prison, without any opportunity for parole.?

Not only did prosecutors decline the guilty offer?first made prior to Holmes? March 12 arraignment?but they also lambasted the defense for making it public.

In a 13-page rebuttal to the defense, the prosecution dubbed the public announcement ?grossly improper? and ?a calculated attempt to improperly inject? the plea in front of the Aurora community and the world. The prosecution also accused the Colorado public defenders office of violating the court?s order on pretrial publicity.

Because of the defense?s public plea, the "only conclusion that [people] would reach ... is that the defendant knows that he is guilty, the defense attorneys know that he is guilty, and that both of them know that he was not criminally insane,? the prosecution?s filing said.

A mental health defense would be central to Holmes? case, his attorneys have implied repeatedly. Nearly all courtroom argument so far has revolved around his mental state, with the prosecution alleging that Holmes carefully crafted a ?detailed and complex? scheme to commit mass murder?with his sanity fully intact.

At the arraignment, King told Sylvester that Holmes wasn?t ready to enter a plea because the defense didn?t know whether the prosecution wanted to pursue the death penalty. The judge then entered a not-guilty plea on Holmes? behalf, as allowed by law.

Also at Monday?s hearing, the defense and attorneys for Jana Winter, a FoxNews.com reporter, argued whether Winter must divulge the names of two law enforcement sources who gave her information for a July 25 story about an unopened package that Holmes mailed to the University of Colorado at Denver. Winter, quoting the unnamed officials, reported that Holmes sent his former school psychiatrist a notebook containing drawings that foreshadowed the attack. Because of a court gag order, those law enforcement sources were prevented from talking to the media.

Holmes? attorneys have argued that by talking with Winter, the two anonymous sources damaged the defendant?s right to a fair trial. Winter was in court Monday morning, but Samour hasn't ruled whether she should testify.

Holmes, 25, was a former neuroscience student at CU-Denver before the massacre at the premiere of ?The Dark Knight Rises,? the latest Batman movie. Police arrested Holmes, who was wearing body armor and had weapons close by, behind the theater shortly after the shootings. Police say he also booby-trapped his nearby Aurora apartment with explosives to injure or kill anyone who entered. He faces multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.

Minister Mbalula must help SA swimmers get to - Newsroom - DA

Winston Rabotapi, Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation
1 April 2013

The DA calls on Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, to assist South Africa?s swimmers competing in the 2013 FINA World Championships. This follows revelations that the swimmers will have to pay for themselves due to a lack of funds at Swimming SA.

Expecting swimmers to pay their own way undermines the growth and development of sport and the performance of our elite athletes. Our sports men and women need to focus on winning medals for their country, not on fundraising.

There is something wrong when the Department of Sport and Recreation spends millions on non-core activities, but does not do enough to assist our athletes when they compete at the highest level.

Not so long ago, in 2011, the Department of Sport and Recreation spent more than 60% of the National Lottery Board?s contribution on a lavish R46 million sports awards ceremony. And the Department has point-blank refused to reveal how much it cost to send a delegation of government officials to the Olympics last year. Our sport stars are a source of national pride. The Department must get its priorities right and help find funding for South African swimmers so that they can compete in Barcelona.

Google's Director Of Privacy Alma Whitten Steps Down

alma_whittenAs Forbes first reported this afternoon, Alma Whitten, Google’s director of privacy for product and engineering, has decided to step down from her current position. Google has now confirmed this. Whitten joined Google 10 years ago and oversaw the company’s privacy policies during a tumultuous time when its Street View cars were accused of spying on people’s Wi-Fi networks and Google decided to consolidate its over 70 privacy policies under a single document. Whitten has a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon, where her thesis looked into “Making Security Usable.” She spent seven years as an engineer at the company before she was promoted to director of privacy right after the Wi-Fi Street View story broke and Google had been severely criticized for the privacy controls of Buzz, its pre-Google+ attempt at launching a social network. At the time, Google described her as “an internationally recognized expert in the computer science field of privacy and security. She has been our engineering lead on privacy for the last two years, and we will significantly increase the number of engineers and product managers working with her in this new role.” Whitten, Forbes reports, will be replaced by Lawrence You, a Google engineer who previously worked at Pixo, Apple and Taligent. Forbes reports Whitten will remain at the company to oversee the transition.
