Mormons praise Romney for spotlighting the faith

WOLFEBORO, N.H. (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney, the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party, sat in the Wolfeboro Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday as, one by one, members of his congregation credited him for bringing the faith more into the public eye.

"There has never been as much positive publicity about the church...thanks to the wonderful campaign of Mitt Romney and his family," J.W. "Bill" Marriott, the chairman of Marriott International, said. Marriott was the first in the congregation to take the podium to offer testimony ? examples of his own life experience and how it's affected his faith, a tradition on the first Sunday of every month in the Mormon church.

"Everybody is looking at us and saying, 'Are you as good as the Romneys?'" Marriott said. "Today we see the church coming out of obscurity, and we see that 90 percent of what has been written and said ... 90 percent of it has been favorable," he said. "And that's a great tribute to Mitt and Ann."

Many Americans have long viewed Mormonism skeptically, and the Salt Lake City-based church has fought for decades for recognition and acceptance as a faith.

In the eyes of Mormons gathered here Sunday, Romney winning the nomination has been overwhelmingly positive for their church.

"He's a marvelous ambassador of who we are," said a member of the Archibald family, another large Mormon clan that, like the Marriotts and the Romneys, vacations in Wolfeboro.

The Marriotts and Romneys are close friends; the hotel magnate is a major campaign donor and the candidate used to serve on the board of Marriott International.

Although Romney has long shied away from talking about a faith that has shaped his life, from his childhood to his college years as well as his marriage and business career. He occasionally has recounted his time counseling families who were struggling members of his Boston congregation. He usually doesn't touch on his two years serving as a missionary in France for the church. And he typically doesn't mention that he at one point rose to a rank equivalent to a bishop and presided over a group of congregations.

In recent weeks, Romney has started to open up about his faith and directly mentioned it during his Thursday night acceptance speech after members of his congregation took the convention stage to praise his work in the church. Said Romney that night: "We were Mormons and growing up in Michigan, that might have seemed unusual or out of place, but I really don't remember it that way. My friends cared more about what sports teams we followed than what church we went to."

Mormonism began in the mid-1800s when, according to believers, an angel presented another book of scripture to Joseph Smith, the church's founder, called the Book of Mormon. With 14.4 million members, the church is among the fastest growing in the world, supported by a full-time missionary force of about 55,000 young people.

At church Sunday, Marriott talked about the church's efforts over the years to explain its mission to Americans who don't understand the faith.

He recounted serving on a committee based in Salt Lake City with Romney's father, George Romney, and then later being featured in a "60 Minutes" piece on the Mormon Church. During the interview, Marriott said he was asked about the specific undergarments, which he described as a t-shirt and boxer shorts, that Mormons are encouraged to wear. He said he told interviewer Mike Wallace that he wore the garments, and about a time when he caught fire in a boating accident. His polyester pants burned, though his undershorts were untouched.

Marriott said he told Wallace: "These holy undergarments saved my life."

Later, another church member rose to offer an example of Romney's influence in publicizing the faith.

She recalled a time when she visited a sick church member in the hospital and a non-Mormon nurse asked her why they had come to visit a woman who wasn't a relative.

The woman said she told the nurse she was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

And the nurse, clearly recognizing the faith, responded: "Oh, Mitt! Oh, Mormon!"

Sitting in the pews, Ann Romney laughed.

Oosthuizen takes 3-shot lead into final round

NORTON, Mass. (AP) ? Louis Oosthuizen had never been to the TPC Boston until his week, although he knew what to expect in the Deutsche Bank Championship.

This is a course that tends to favor power, and the South African has plenty of that. It's also a course where players make a lot of birdies, and no one has made more than his 19 over the opening three rounds.

"If you're playing well, you can shoot really low numbers," Oosthuizen said.

Oosthuizen carried out the scouting report to near perfection Sunday in the third round, at least for a two-hour stretch that was close to flawless. He made eight birdies in a nine-hole stretch ? the exception was No. 3, where he missed a 5-foot birdie putt ? before he cooled down on the back nine and had to settle for an 8-under 63.

It was enough to build a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy, who was exceptional on the back nine to post a 67 that kept the tournament from getting away from him.

Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson were still in the mix, just barely. Woods made back-to-back birdies late in his round for a 68, while Johnson's Ryder Cup hopes took a strong turn in the right direction with a 65.

Oosthuizen set a trio of tournament records on another sun-filled day south of Boston, until some dark clouds and a light rain showed up in the final hour. He made seven straight birdies. He shot a 29 on the front nine. And he completed 54 holes in 19-under 194.

But the Labor Day conclusion was sure to include a lot more work ahead for Oosthuizen.

Yes, the TPC Boston allows for birdies, though not just for him. McIlroy and Johnson also have 19 birdies going into the final round. And while Woods has never come from further than five shots behind to win on the PGA Tour, six years ago in Boston he rallied from three back with a 63 that toppled Vijay Singh by two shots.

To see Oosthuizen threaten to run away from the field was not discouraging as much as it indicated what was out there. Earlier on Sunday, Keegan Bradley had a 63 despite a bogey on the 17th and failing to make birdie on the par-5 18th.

"With the conditions like this, we're going to have to shoot some good numbers," Woods said. "It's definitely gettable. Louis played a good round, Keegan played a good round early. You can post 4, 5, 6 under par on that front nine if you get it going early. The back nine is certainly gettable, as well. I think I shot 30 on the front nine against Vijay. I'm going to need a quick start like I had that day.

"That's basically what Louis did and that's what Keegan did, as well," he said. "You get off to quick starts, you can get it going."

Oosthuizen had some help with a pure putting stroke that matched his sweet, simple swing, which has become the envy of the PGA Tour. His birdie streak began with a chip from behind the short par-4 fourth hole to 6 feet. He had a simple up-and-down from next to the green on the par-5 seventh. And it ended with a shot into 2 feet on No. 10. Along the way, he holed birdie putts of 20 feet on Nos. 5 and 6, a 40-footer on the par-3 eighth and a 25-foot birdie putt on the ninth.

"After making the putt on 8, I felt like I can't miss anything," Oosthuizen said. "And then on 9, you just needed to get it high enough out, and then it's all about the speed, and I got it perfect again. ... You know, standing on the putt on 11, I thought I had a perfect line again. The last thing I thought was missing it."

Alas, he missed it, though not by much.

It was at that point in the round McIlroy came back to life. He started the third round with a one-shot lead, played reasonably well for 10 holes and was six behind. Then, Boy Wonder had to watch the South African hit a tee shot on 11 that covered the flag, just a little strong to 20 feet beyond the hole. McIlroy went after his shot, high with a gentle draw that dropped next to the hole and settled 6 feet behind the flag.

He rolled it in for a birdie, then stood at the back of the green waiting for Oosthuizen to clean up his par.

McIlroy held out his arm and clenched his fist and said to Oosthuizen proudly, "I've got honors."

They laughed, exchanged a high-five and walked toward the 12th tee, and McIlroy said with a grin, "I feel like I've got a chance."

Rivalries in golf, at least in the last 50 years, seem to be more interesting when the players are a generation apart. Coming from the same generation, this is a good place to start. McIlroy already has two majors, both by eight shots. Oosthuizen, who never looks like he's going to hit a bad shot, won his sole major by seven shots at St. Andrews in the 2010 British Open.

McIlroy kept up the pace with a tee shot on No. 12 that glided high and far, the longest of the day at 326 yards, setting up a wedge to 5 feet.

"The birdie on 11 sort of sparked things, and I hit a couple of great shots into 12," McIlroy said. "If you're talking about momentum in a round, I think 11 definitely gave me some momentum."

Oosthuizen thought briefly about a 59 ? remember, he once had a 57 on his home course at Mossel Bay along the Garden Route of South Africa ? and had to settle for a 63. He had a six-shot lead on the 10th hole and it was down to only three at the end of the day.

If McIlroy winds up with the trophy Monday, he may well have won it on Sunday afternoon.

"Rory just kept on coming at me, and I knew that," Oosthuizen said. "I knew I needed to make birdies to keep a five- or six-shot lead. So a bit disappointed in that I had a lot of opportunities on the back nine for birdies, and I only made two with a bogey on 17. All in all, started the day one behind, going into tomorrow leading by three. I'm very happy."

Tesla driver fails to complete world tour after crash on the home straight

Car accident stops 80eDays Tesla Roadster from completing world tour

An unfortunate traffic accident brought Rafael de Mestre's electric trek across the globe to an abrupt halt today, stopping his Tesla Roadster a scant 600 miles from the finish line. "Game over," the world traveler wrote on Facebook and Twitter, posting a picture of the damaged vehicle and assuring readers that he survived the ordeal. Since then, he's only offered a small update, lamenting the loss of his faithful electric carriage and sharing a short video of the accident's aftermath. Lend the dejected driver some moral support (or just engage in digital rubbernecking) at the source links below.

Update: We initially reported that Rafael was just a kilometer from the end of his race when he crashed, but in fact wiped out 1,000km from the line -- still very unlucky considering he'd traveled 24,000km unscathed.

YouTube:?Bike Opens Fitness Options for Users With Disabilities

No matter how physically limited a person might be, physical fitness continues to be the common denominator for longer, more fulfilling lives.

Thanks to a generous gift from two local donors, the University of Alberta's Steadward Centre for Personal and Physical Achievement now boasts an impressive new piece of equipment that allows people with quadriplegia and paraplegia better access to such a life.

The RT 300 Motorized Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Cycle Ergometer allows people who have lost the use of their legs to better access a technology designed to keep them fit.

FES is a technique which applies electrical currents to paralyzed muscle through electrodes placed on the surface of the skin. This current delivers the necessary stimulation to illicit a muscle contraction with the purpose of providing useful movement so a person can exercise.

"We stimulate their muscles to pedal the bicycle against a resistance," said Bethany Steen, an FES consultant with the centre. "Just as anyone would pedal on an exercise bike, their muscles are pedalling but the action is controlled by electrical stimulation.

"It stimulates the quadriceps on one side just at the same time as the quadriceps on the other so then it is a push-pull pedaling motion. Just as your brain controls your own muscles, the machine controls the muscles in this case."

For people who have lost the use of their legs, the muscles in the legs begin to deteriorate.

"Over time we can slow muscle atrophy and even build up muscle," said Steen, adding that there are other benefits as well. "The RT 300 allows people to also get some much-needed cardiovascular exercise. Because they are sitting in their chairs all the time, they are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and Type 2 diabetes."

Steen says the bike improves circulation, which helps with pressure sores and seems to alleviate the pain that comes with muscle spasms.

"And just getting some general exercise, their energy levels go up, and just like any of us who get out and exercise regularly, they start to feel better about themselves."

The centre already utilizes two similar bikes, but the RT 300 has the advantage of being transfer free, which means users stay in their own wheelchair during the workout.

"The difference with this bike is that the staff doesn't have to transfer you, so it is a lot easier on them," said Darin Wood, a 19-year-old quadriplegic who has been using the RT 300 three times a week. An avid athlete before a car accident in May of 2006, Wood found a way to stay physically active despite his injury thanks to the cutting-edge equipment at The Steadward Centre.

"I was playing hockey five to six nights a week, not only that but all kinds of sports. I was extremely active, but after being on the bike a short amount of time it was almost like my legs woke back up again. I got my hockey legs back."

Another improvement on the new bike, which carries a price tag of more than $20,000, is that it is controlled by wireless Internet. Programs designed online can be downloaded onto the RT 300. Every member has a specific code that is punched into the control pad and their individual program comes up.

"The bike, being so new, means it is a lot smoother and there are a lot more program advances," said Wood, one of seven Steadward Centre members who use the RT 300. "We can work at a greater level of resistance and use different strengthening exercises. The greater level of resistance gives me harder workouts, so in that sense you get more of a cardio workout and a muscle workout as well."

YouTube:?Dancers With Disabilities Inspire

(Edmonton) We spend time validating each others life experiences, learning about coping and being grateful for the small things in life that many people take for granted.

Lindsay Eales is proud to be the artistic director for iDANCE Edmonton, a program thats aimed at increasing accessibility for dancers with disabilities.

The dancers have learned that disability has little to do with physical or mental abilities. As a group they honour each others personal stories and express their inner selves through movement.
Julie Heffel, who has been dancing with the group for six months, says once she tried it she was hooked.

We all have different stories. As soon as we get through the doorway we are all just people. Whatever were facing that day is left behind, said Heffel.

The program is delivered by the University of Albertas Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement. Donna Goodwin, executive director for the centre, says the program is created by the dancers, for the dancers.

The leadership for iDANCE comes from within the group. Each dancer brings a life story that adds to the creative fabric of their work.

The iDANCE Edmonton group was awarded this week with a Human Rights Award for Excellence, in the category of new/emerging organization. Eales says this award is a great honour.

People are hearing the voice that were bringing to our community about human rights and disability.

As a student in the 1960s, Bob Steadward ('69 BPE, '71 MSc) helped plan a wheelchair basketball tournament. That involvement eventually led to his becoming the world's foremost figure in the promotion of sports for persons with disabilities and an organizer of international sporting events. He has served three consecutive terms as president of the International Paralympic Committee and is the director of the University of Alberta's Rick Hansen Centre, a world renowned research and development facility for disabled athletes.
