CIA remembers those lost in covert operations

(AP) ? The CIA is remembering those lost in the hidden, often dangerous world of espionage, adding a new star to the intelligence agency's memorial wall and more than a dozen names to its hallowed Book of Honor.

The new star carved into the wall is for Jeffrey Patneau, a young officer killed in a car crash in Yemen in September 2008.

"Jeff proved that he had boundless talent, courage and innovativeness to offer to our country in its fight against terrorism," said CIA Director David Petraeus at a private ceremony at CIA headquarters this past week.

Petraeus' tribute was the first public identification of Patneau. The stars on the memorial wall at headquarters in Langley, Va., bear no names.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, was the site of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors. Patneau was part of the fight against militants in the country in a tense year in which the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa was attacked.

With the addition of the star for Patneau, the wall now commemorates the lives of 103 Americans who died in service of the CIA, "never for acclaim, always for country," Petraeus said at the annual event attended by hundreds of employees and family members of those lost. The rememberance came just days ahead of Memorial Day, when the nation remembers its military veterans and those who died in war.

The addition of 15 names to the CIA's Book of Honor means family members can openly acknowledge where their loved ones worked when they died.

Leslianne Shedd was lost when hijackers forced down her plane over the Indian Ocean, killing more than 125 people.

"Everybody who was on the plane with her who survived said she was not at all scared," her sister, Corinne Collie, told The Associated Press on Saturday. "She was saying it's all going to be okay, holding the hand of the person sitting next to her."

Collie says the agency approached her family a year ago, saying it was now possible to acknowledge her death ? likely meaning the cases she had worked on had been wrapped up, or staff she worked with had either retired or were no longer in harm's way. Collie said being able to share what her sister did has been a relief.

"To lose a sister and not be able to talk about the full picture of who she was has been hard," said Collie of Tacoma, Wash.

"The biggest relief is my parents ... get to acknowledge and brag about her, especially my dad," she said.

Like Shedd, most of those honored were killed in the clandestine war on terrorism, the list reading like a grim roll call of terrorist acts of the last three decades. Matthew Gannon was among the victims of the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Molly Hardy was killed in the August 1998 suicide bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. She urged others to take cover as she was hit by the blast from an al-Qaida car bomb.

Jacqueline Van Landingham was killed in a terrorist attack in Pakistan in 1995. The CIA did not disclose how she died.

CIA officers face constant threat in Pakistan, hunting and hunted by the Taliban and al-Qaida. They often play a cat-and-mouse game with Pakistan's intelligence service, sometimes able to work with them and sometimes forced to work around them to gather intelligence on al-Qaida's militant diaspora. U.S. officials say it gets support from elements of the Pakistani government.

Five of those remembered were victims of the April 1983 suicide bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut that killed 63 people.

Among the CIA officers lost was Phyliss Nancy Faraci, "one of the last four Americans evacuated from the Mekong Delta when Saigon fell" during the Vietnam War, according to CIA spokesman Todd Ebitz. Faraci had volunteered to work in war-torn Beirut.

Deborah Hixon, a young officer fluent in French who volunteered for a temporary posting there, also died in the attack. Frank Johnston was a 25-year agency veteran who had accepted the assignment though he was close to retirement.

Paramilitary officer James Lewis, who had joined the CIA after his military career, and his wife, Monique Lewis, also were killed. Lewis was "only hours into her first day as an Agency officer when the bomber struck," Ebitz said.

mls cup amas 2011 black friday elliot elliot la galaxy la galaxy

Johnson has 1st-round lead at Colonial after 64

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Zach Johnson stood behind the fourth green looking at his club and then the ball that rolled within 4 feet of the hole.

"I got lucky," Johnson said about his second shot on the 244-yard par 3 ? his 13th hole Thursday ? after his tee shot went through the green and stopped in a clump of grass.

Three holes later, Johnson was so deep in a greenside bunker that he couldn't even be seen from the other side of the green until he popped up to watch his blast over the ridge to 2 1/2 feet from the cup.

Those par-savers were part of a bogey-free 6-under 64 that gave him a one-stroke lead after the first round in the Colonial, where 20-30 mph wind with higher gusts whipped through the big oak trees lining the fairways.

"Today was great. I got off to a good start, just hit some quality shots. I didn't put myself ever in a position that was too worrisome," Johnson said. "I kept the golf course in front me. I attacked when I could attack. I had a couple of nice saves when I needed it. ... I've got zero complaints."

Jason Dufner, rookie Harris English, Tom Gillis and Kyle Reifers were tied for second.

Dufner won the Byron Nelson Championship last week, and both of his PGA Tour victories have come in the last four weeks. He started at Colonial with three consecutive birdies, was 5 under after a 10-foot birdie putt at the 174-yard eighth hole, then overcame two bogeys in a three-hole stretch.

Johnson opened with a 40-foot birdie putt at the 396-yard 10th hole on way to his 13th consecutive under-par round at Hogan's Alley. He set the Colonial tournament scoring record with his 21-under 259 in 2010, when he had a pair of 64s in his last PGA Tour victory.

After hitting into a greenside bunker at the 435-yard 12th, he blasted to 9 feet to save par.

"The big putt that got me going," he said. He then had four consecutive birdies, a span that included two par 3s and all the putts between 14-21 feet.

Sergio Garcia, the 2001 Colonial champ in the same group as Johnson, shot a 66 to match Chris DiMarco, Tommy Gainey and Andres Romero.

The 22-year-old English had never played a full round at Colonial until Thursday. That came three days after he shot rounds of 60 and 63 during a British Open qualifier at Gleneagles. That is a much more wide-open layout just outside of Dallas about an hour from Colonial.

"Three bogey-free rounds I have had in a row, which I've never done," English said. "I'm playing solid golf and not really getting out of position. I'm getting my putter going. I'm hitting it to 15 or 20 feet a lot and seemed to be making a good many of those. It's just been good."

English, a winner last year on the Nationwide Tour as an amateur, has made 11 of 14 cuts in his first season on the PGA Tour.

Johnson, the 2007 Masters champion, hasn't won since slipping on that winner's plaid jacket at Colonial two years ago. But he has made all 12 cuts this year, with a runner-up finish at Hilton Head and a tie for second at The Players Championship in his three previous events.

Garcia had an eagle-3 at the 558-yard No. 1, getting him to 5 under through 10 holes. His only bogey came after hitting his tee shot at the dogleg-left third hole into a greenside bunker, and he saved par out of bunkers his last two holes. He hasn't won on the PGA Tour in four years.

Defending Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial champion David Toms, in the group with Johnson and Garcia, had only one birdie in an opening 74. Last year, the 45-year-old Toms started with consecutive rounds of 62 to match the PGA Tour scoring record for the first 36 holes of a tournament.

Duner's approach at No. 9 was just off the back fringe, and he chipped to 6 feet before his par putt circled the cup without falling. A 25-foot birdie attempt at No. 10 rolled over the right edge of the cup, then he bogeyed the 635-yard 11th hole when his third shot went in a greenside bunker and he then two-putted from 9 feet.

Dufner was playing with Matt Kuchar, who two weeks ago won The Players Championship, and Rickie Fowler, The Players runner-up who the week before that got his first PGA Tour victory at Quail Hollow.

Kuchar's only birdie in a round of 72 came on the par-5 No. 1. Fowler birdied two of the last three holes for a 68.

"Decent. Not good, not bad," Fowler said. "It's nice to make two birdies in the last three holes and get back under par and give me some momentum."

Divots: Masters runner-up Louis Oosthuizen shot 71, ending his round with an eagle by holing his approach from 117 yards at the par-4 18th. ... Ben Crane's round of 70 included six birdies, six bogeys and six pars. ... Hunter Mahan, the only other two-time winner this season besides Dufner, shot a 69 with three bogeys. ... Sean O'Hair withdrew because of a neck issue.

Movie Review: Men in Black 3 ? The Birth of Damnation

Movie Review: Men in Black?3

Back in the nineties, Will Smith is one of the coolest people on the planet. He stars in summer blockbusters and sells a gazillion of records. Fine. Singing about going to Miami might be the real reason Lebron James decided to take his talent somewhere else but the point is Mr. Smith WAS BIG ?back then. I remember the exact moment I felt he was going to be a special part of pop culture: him punching an alien in the hit flick Independence Day. One sucker-punch and I got hooked. So there is no reason to question the irrational fascination for Men in Black ? the Spielberg-Sonnenfeld collaboration catapulting Smith to superstardom. The personal preference for putting on a pair of sunnies despite the apparent signs of an impending rain is because of Men in Black. The continuing admiration for pugs is because of Men in Black. The inexplicable habit of ignoring the tropical heat to put on a black on black outfit is all Men in Black. And I still remember how to do the Men in Black jig: (1) bounce (2) slide (3) walk and (4) freeze.

Therefore there is no question I needed to see the third installment of the franchise. Since the second one is a little messed up, the expectations is set on a 50/100 scale. Surprise, surprise. It is not that bad. Not that awesome either but the setting is tipped to a 60-65/100 score.

Boris is the last of the murderous Bologdite alien race and is serving jail term in the Lunar Maximum Prison. After a successful prison-break, he sought to kill his nemesis K (Tommy Lee Jones) in 1969 in order to continue his plan of conquering Earth. It is all up to J (Smith) to intercept Boris and save the future of our planet and the future of his partner. But going back in time has its consequences, like realizing the hard truth of the past.

First off, the Jones-Smith team-up still has screen magic. The craggier and stonier K remains the perfect foil the brash loudmouth J. No one is craggier and stonier than the indefatigable Mr. Jones no one is a cooler brash loudmouth than the unflappable Mr. Smith. The crucial burden is placed upon the able shoulders of Josh Brolin as the ?younger K. Man, he does look like a younger Tommy Lee Jones, from the square jawline to his demeanor. Incredible casting choice. Brolin does a consistent fabulous job in supporting roles. He might not be remembered much in Milk as he was engulfed in the larger-than-life performance of Sean Penn but I remember him. He is such an incredible force in the film, it felt like he is switching an automatic button transforming from a pitiful, to hateful and to a pathetic character in seconds. As the new Men in Black Bureau chief, Emma Thompson as Agent O got the chance to demonstrate her comic brilliance. I just wished she was provided longer screen exposure. Aside from her enormous comedic talent, check out her gorgeous gorgeous hair.

The writers behind the film could not have picked a better decade to time travel. I confess harboring ?a certain fondness for the 1960s as seen in this blog post, but the decade is the great age of space. So what better time for aliens to plan inter-planetary invasion than when two of the most powerful nations on Earth are battling to get out of its atmosphere. We all know, the end of the decade features the culminating event of all the space research and undertaking, and the film put it to good use. Alongside scientific progress, the decade is also a monumental time for fashion and music. I still think it is the best era of mankind in terms of fashion and music so it would not hurt a bit if the filmmakers opted to highlight its achievements. Female Men in Black agents in little black dress and flipped hair-dos is all good but it looks inadequate considering the inconceivable opportunities the time-travel film mechanism provides. Same goes for the music. Of course, there is little to be desired in the song choices of K but J and O must have been more in tune with the times. So I just needed to see more of the decade but CAN YOU BLAME ME. No. Oh. Bill Hader as a famous art icon is genius.

Most time travelling fantasies are borne out of desire to see life in the past. Most time travel films are purposeful in nature. There is the need to correct the past in order to set the present for a better future. Men in Back 3 is in accordance with ?purposeful time-travelling ?but it also puts forth another reason for going back in time: TO UNDERSTAND THE TRUTHS OF THE PAST AND THEREFORE THE REALITIES OF THE PRESENT. That one honest scene made all the difference.
