PFT: How to reconcile Tebow's stances?

Tim Tebow is capable of throwing an accurate ball. ?He?s just not capable of doing so consistently.

But he says he?s not bothered by criticism of his throwing ability.

?First of all it is not my place to try and debate and make myself look good,? Tebow told ESPN New York?s Stephen A. Smith and Ryan Ruoco, via SportsRadioInterviews.com, after Smith told Tebow that Smith doesn?t have confidence in the way Tebow throws. ??That?s not my place at all. ?I appreciate you complementing?me saying that I have an impact and that I can win football games. ?I really appreciate that and just as far as getting better throwing I?ve been working extremely hard on that.?

Tebow said. ??Definitely some things I am working on as far as mechanic-wise to get better in the NFL and improve. ?You can see that in certain situations I?ve done that. ?In certain situations I have tried to be very careful with the ball and not have a lot of turnovers and so there are some situations where I probably should have forced some more balls in there. ?There are some situations where I feel like I have done some good things. I am just going to continue to get better, but I appreciate the complements and the rest I use as motivation.?

Tebow also addressed the fine line he?s walking between supporting starter Mark Sanchez and ?absolutely? competing with Sanchez. ?Smith say it?s a contradiction. ?(And we agree with Smith.)

?I disagree with you that it?s contradicting yourself,? Tebow said. ??I think there are things that are more important than football games. ?Your relationship, how you treat people, and relationships in general, that?s more important to me than football games. ?We spend a lot of time, we?re passionate about it, but ultimately football is not the most important thing, but as far as rooting someone on, supporting them? ?You can do that with still trying to go out there and do your best. ?And if your best is better, than so be it. ?If it?s not then you have to do the other roles you are asked to do. ?I don?t think you have to have an attitude where you have to say, ?I don?t want someone to do their best.? ?Absolutely not. ?I want them to do their best. ?I just want to do my best and continue to develop to the best that I can be and if that?s good enough to go out there and be a starting quarterback then that?s great. ?If it?s not I am going to ask whatever role I am asked to do.?

Tebow doesn?t know what role(s) he?ll be asked to do. ??I gotta be 100 percent honest. ?You know, I?m not sure,? Tebow said. ??I think for me it?s whatever I?m asked to do, I do it with all my heart. ?I try to do a great job at it. ?We?re in day four, so just continuing to learn. ?We?re continuing to learn the coaches, they?re learning us, learning the offense, learning installs. ?So it?s so early in the process that I have to say I can?t give you a straight answer on that.?

He can honestly say he?s not sure about his role(s) because he?s honest in his ambition to become the starting quarterback. ?If he?s not the starter, then he?ll be the Wildcat quarterback and the personal punt protector and a member of the kickoff team and a member of the kick return team and maybe a fullback/H-back/right tackle.

But Tebow wants to be the starter. ?And that will serve only to fuel the media and the fans who want to see Tebow play if Sanchez struggles.

And that?s why the Jets would be better off if Tebow were to stand up and say that he fully supports Mark Sanchez, that Tebow accepts the team?s repeated statements that Sanchez is the starter, and that Tebow will do whatever he is asked to do as the backup quarterback and whatever else the team asks him to do.

But Tebow is less likely to do that than he is to run wind sprints in the rain with his shirt on.

HOUSTON (AP) ? The former three-term mayor of the Texas border town Eagle Pass has died of cancer.

The Yeager Barrera Mortuary in Eagle Pass said Chad Foster died Saturday in a Houston hospital. The mortuary is responsible for his funeral.

Foster was re-elected to a third term in office in May 2008. He also served as chairman of the Texas Border Coalition, a group that focuses on economic and development issues of towns along the Texas-Mexico border.

Eagle Pass' current mayor and chairman of the Texas Border Coalition Ramsey Cantu said in a statement that the region had lost a "devoted friend and public servant."

Foster is survived by a son and a daughter. The mortuary could not immediately confirm Foster's age or provide details on funeral arrangements.

A researcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has received a grant of more than $500,000 from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for his study of the neurological disease, the organization announced this week.

Gordon Meares, a postdoctoral fellow in UAB's Department of Cell Biology, will study how cells in the brain and spinal cord may influence the immune system in MS for clues to stopping immune attacks, the organization said. The society this month committed up to $18.4 million to support 52 new research projects and training fellowships.

"Without the support of the National MS Society, we would not be able to pursue these critical leads," Meares said in a statement.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease in which the nerves of the central nervous system degenerate. MS interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and the body. There are theories on the causes of multiple sclerosis. MS may be an autoimmune disease, which happens when the body attacks itself. The disease often begins between the ages of 20 and 50.

Usually, the disease is mild, but some people lose the ability to write, speak or walk. There is no cure for MS, but medicines may slow it down and help control symptoms. Physical and occupational therapy may also help.

In Alabama, MS affects more than 4,200 families. More than 2.1 million people live worldwide with the challenges of the disease, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Jan Bell, president of the society's Alabama-Mississippi chapter, said the society's research program constantly strives to find a cure for MS.

"Our long-standing investment has resulted in new treatments and better methods of diagnosis and disease management for people with MS, and we will continue to pursue all promising paths that lead to solutions for everyone affected by MS," Bell said in a statement.

The national organization reports there are therapies approved by the Food and Drug Administration that can affect the underlying disease in people with the more common forms of MS. Those therapies cannot stop the progression or reverse the damage to restore function.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Online retailer Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday reported muted second-quarter earnings and projected an operating loss for the current quarter as it absorbs the costs of a warehouse technology acquisition and plans to spend more on order-fulfillment centers ahead of the holidays.

Amazon said its profit was hurt by a $65 million loss related to its acquisition of Kiva Systems Inc., a warehouse technology company that Amazon agreed to buy in March for $775 million in cash. The deal closed on May 1. Amazon is hoping that Kiva's automated systems help boost productivity and improve profitability in the long run.

The Seattle-based company said it expects third-quarter revenue to grow between 19 percent and 31 percent from a year ago. That amounts to sales of $12.9 billion to $14.3 billion. The midpoint is short of the $14.1 billion expected by analysts, according to FactSet.

It also forecast a third-quarter operating loss of $50 million to $350 million.

Chief Financial Officer Tom Szkutak said the projected loss was due in part to investment in the company's fulfillment centers ahead of the all-important holiday quarter. It plans to open 18 new fulfillment centers this year and has opened six so far, he said.

After initially falling, Amazon's shares rose $2.63, or 1.2 percent, to $222.64 in extended trading following the release of the results.

Amazon reported net income in the three months to June 30 came to just $7 million, or a penny per share, a drop of 96 percent from $191 million, or 41 cents, a year ago.

That matched analysts' meager expectations.

Revenue grew 29 percent to $12.83 billion, which was short of the $12.90 billion expected by analysts.

Amazon said that revenue was weighed by currency movements to the tune of $272 million, which the company had forewarned of in April.

Sales of digital goods like Kindle e-books, music and movies rose 13 percent to $4.12 billion, while sales of electronics and other items rose 38 percent to $8.16 billion.

The Kindle Fire, a $199 tablet tailored to handle purchases from Amazon.com, remained the company's top-selling item.

For now, it appears investors are giving the company's lackluster forecast a pass. Earnings for the fiscal year through December are estimated by analysts to be just $1.17 per share, meaning shares are trading at an eye-popping 190 times earnings.

Apple Inc. shares trade at around 13 times earnings while Google Inc. shares trade at around 14 times earnings.

North Koreans angered by flag blunder

North Korea's women's football team refused to take the field for more than an hour Wednesday in protest at an embarrassing mix-up of their national flag on day one of the London Olympics.

The team were incensed after Hampden Park's giant screen showed images of North Korean players next to the South Korean flag before their opening match with Colombia.

The game missed its 7:45 pm (1845 GMT) start after North Korea failed to appear. After it finally kicked off at 8:50 pm, North Korea won 2-0 with a goal in each half.

"Yes, we were angry because our players were introduced as if they are from South Korea, something that may affect us very greatly as you might know," said North Korea coach Sin Ui-Gun.

"Winning the game cannot compensate this. It is a different matter. We hope there is no repeat in the next matches," he added.

Sin said North Korea would have abandoned the game if the problem was not resolved, and said he had even wondered if the wrong flag had not been used on purpose.

"If this matter was not solved, we thought going on was nonsense," he said.

Olympics organisers and FIFA apologised over the blunder, which came among a series of other howlers on the first day of competition of London 2012.

"Today ahead of the women's football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag," said a statement from the London organising committee.

"Clearly that is a mistake, we will apologise to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again."

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Team GB sent out an email referring to the Great Britain women's football team as "England".

And organisers offered a refund to diving fans whose view will be partially obscured due to a defect in Olympic Park's purpose-built, wave-shaped Aquatics Centre.

The North Korean error recalls a notorious incident in March, when organisers of a shooting competition in Kuwait played a spoof anthem from comedy film "Borat" instead of the Kazakh national verse.

In May, South Africa's hockey team were treated to a rendition of the country's apartheid-era anthem at their London Cup match against Britain.

Relations between the two Koreas, still officially at war and sharing the world's most heavily guarded border, have plunged in recent months over the communist North's nuclear programme.

The countries did not hold talks on reprising 2004's joint march at the Athens Olympics opening ceremony.

In Britain, North Korean officials have blocked South Korean media from covering their athletes' training sessions, according to the South's Yonhap news agency.

However, South Korea's weightlifters politely rearranged a training session this week after the North Korean team arrived at the same venue at the same time, in a scheduling mistake.

Weboolu hopes to throw the traditional game console business for a loop with something it calls a Virtual Entertainment Console. All the tech needs is a web browser and a smartphone that doubles as a touchscreen controller.

The so-called ?console? is an alternative way to play games for someone with just a smartphone and a PC, Smart TV, or any kind of web-connected display. Gur Zeevi, chief executive and co-founder of Weboolu, claimed in an interview with GamesBeat that this method is a clever way to put both games and web videos in places where they were never intended to be played. This just the latest in a trend of games spreading to just about any screen imaginable.

?We can use the hardware that you already have and turn it into a game machine,? Zeevi said.

You can initiate the Virtual Entertainment Console within any web browser and control it with a web-enabled mobile device. It supports multiplayer experiences where users can simultaneously connect to a single virtual console and engage in the same game. The tech supports iPhones, iPod Touches, and Android devices as touchscreen controllers. The company is showing the system at the Casual Connect game conference in Seattle this week.

Founded in February 2011, the company has just six employees. Weboolu is still in beta testing and Zeevi (pictured right) hopes to launch this summer.

Itay Gur, co-founder and vice president of business development, said that web-enabled screens are emerging everywhere. They?re available on mobile devices, Smart TVs, tablets, and other machines. These can all display casual entertainment such as simple games or YouTube videos, Zeevi said.

With the smartphone and a Smart TV, you can use your television display publicly and your smartphone privately, which enables you to enter in a credit card number that you don?t want everyone else in the room to see. Developers can use the screen of the smartphone as a kind of app store. A user can log into the cloud-based Weboolu system and get access to their library of games or virtual coins.

Weboolu has created a few games, such as Jewel Hunt, a match-three game, to show off how the system works. Another demo is Band Tube, a Guitar Hero-style game where you can play rock songs with a smartphone controller. The system is expected to be available at the end of the summer. Ten titles are available on the system, including six made by third-party developers.

Zeevi said the company plans to work with carriers to integrate the service into various app experiences. Zeevi said the company is raising a round of funding.
